The French milsurp rifle #### thread!

Dear fellow French rifle collectors and experts, I'm here for your guidance and enlightenment again. I am hoping to buy another Berthier rifle from a nice seller, but only have a few questions before I commit. With the seller's permission (he is also as interested as I am), I would like to ask the following:

1. The Berthier rifle was marked M on the barrel. Can anyone tell me if this means it's modified for use machine gun ammunitions? And what year did they start to make this change, during or after the Great War?
2. The said rifle does have a year make on the action/barrel. The seller sent me many pics, and indeed no markings of the year make is there. It's very smooth where the year should be too and doesn't look like it's been removed, there's simply nothing there.
3. Can you guys tell me if this rifle is authentic and can pass for a WWI-era rifle? Or is it a post-war modification? From that I mean it's not like a Balle N Berthier, which has conversions done in the 1930s.

Please let me know if you can, thanks in advance guys, cheers!

My only French girl. And the first Rifle I ever hand loaded for.

From left to right:

Berthier Mle. 1892 Mousqueton de Artillerie. Manufactured at Saint-étienne. Rebarreled at Châtellerault in 1933. I'm not entirely sure of the original manufacture date.

Berthier Mle. 1907-15 Manufactured at Saint-étienne in 1916. Fitted with a brass handled M1886 "Rosalie" bayonet with no quillion.

Berthier Mle. 1916 Manufactured at Châtellerault in 1917. Fitted with a third type M1892 bayonet.

Berthier Mle. 1907-15 Manufactured at Saint-étienne and modified by the Turks in 1948 for their forestry service.

MAS Mle 1936/51 Manufactured at Saint-étienne in 1956

I'm still on the hunt for a Lebel to really round out the french WW I collection but it's a decent start. I also really want to get a dummy rifle grenade to try out the launcher on the MAS. Just for S&G.

Someone put a coat of lacquer on the 1892 at some point so that needs to be stripped off eventually but all in all I'm quite happy with them.

Damn I regret selling my MAS 36 especially as the prices have doubled over here and the condition have got worse.

Beautiful! Thanks for sharing :)

How often do MAS rifles go on the market? I've been looking for a MAS 36 or 49/56 for a while and I can't seem to find them anywhere.

Took this lovely out to the range. I believe it is the first time it has been fired in at leaSt 30 years. It can still reach out and touch things. Pretty good for 101 years old MAS

That's a beauty right there. I'm hoping for one, Berthier or Lebel, they're just so special.
