Grouse hunting guns

Mid 1930's F.W Heym 16 gauge SxS with 29' barrels choked very open....don't have exact measurement but something like skeet and improved cylinder. With a dog, on the wing.

I pretty much just shoot 20 gauge on grouse... currently a Browning BSS Sporter and a Browning Citori 525. When we are hunting sharptails and put up a flock, we will snipe the lookout birds with a .22, which allows us to work the dog into the grounded birds without wild flushing. I am using an Anschutz 1416 with a VX-2 6-18x40mm AO scope to hunt head's from 75 yards.

Fabulous photo.
Happy mutt.

I've shot a pile this year with this and I absolutely love it. Hunting for 25 years and first time using a double and I'm a fan.

We had a rossi overland sxs 12 ga (3") 20" bbl back a few years ago which had exposed hammers which we liked better for several safety reasons.
Was a great bird gun.

I've used SKB M100 and M200 20ga SxS for years. They are very good field guns on par wit Browning SxS and O/U quality. Pricing is a bit lower but those prices are rising.
The M200 and M100 come with 25 and 28 inch bbls. The 25s are choked IC/M which is perfect for upland but I always felt they were a bit too short for me. YMMV. Last year I purchased a 20ga M100 with 28" bbls that had the chokes reamed to IC/M. It's almost perfect as a bird gun except it's missing the second trigger.

I lean heavily towards SC here. Both in 20 gauge, have Ithaca-SKB Model 500 0/U 26inch IC-Mod and my 1971 made Ithaca M37 Featherlight is presently at the gunsmith.

I always wondered if SK/IC was a better combo for grouse & woodcock than IC/M. I used a SK tube in a 20ga 870 Special Field that lived here for a while. It worked fine.

Had a 28ga BPS and sold it stupid me, that was my favourite grouse gun. I want another 28, even a single shot. Would love an 1100.

For now I just use my single shot 20ga. Last time I was around the trails in our bush on the ATV I had my 10 gauge on my lap. Would have aimed an inch or two high and hoped for a clean decapitation LOL.

You can always crack it open if you are worried about safety. I like internal hammers and 2 triggers.
Me too, external hammers don't make a gun safe, safe gun handling does. Dont point the gun at anything that dont need pointing at...

I usually use my mossberg 500, but ive take to swapping the buttstock off it and putting it onto my daughters mossberg 510 in 20 gauge. A little light for a nice swing but the areas i hunt are very much point and shoot or they're gone, not much chance for a nice swing. Carries very nicely and I like the location of the pump better than the full size 500. Iv been eyeing up one of the husqvarnas on tradex.com but am a little leery of inexpensive sxs's.
