Type 81 Owners Corner !

Personally, I think we are getting factory overruns and borderline military rejects from the "large military order" which would explain both the variable quality of the rifles and the uncertainty in the quantities. It is not uncommon for passable (in the civilian world) military rejects to be handed off to the civilian market if the same production line is servicing both. It's not like the Canadian market is an invested or a long term buyer for them. For them, we are a small one off order in the grand scheme of things - like goat droppings in a hurricane.

They already had select fire SKS, and a clone of AK. This was supposed to be an improvement on both.

So is it just these half-assedly assembled canadian rifles or the design itself is inherently worse than both AK and SKS?

None of the above. That's like asking "so do you still beat your wife?".

There are some rifle in this batch that while functional, have cosmetic defects like warped receivers or crooked buttstocks. In combat those rifle would probably be fine and likely would not have been rejected by the pla as $200 bullet hoses.

But when you pay $1000 in Canada, you expect a nicer product - hence why the glossy blonde wood in lieu of dark oiled wood, for example.

If TI were a more credible outfit they might have contracted a QA inspector to ensure a consistent standard for this commerical order, but alas, this was done on the cheap...

Amen

I am starting to agree with some tinfoil conspiracy theories here.

Dremelled bolts, accuracy issues and bent rifles = military contract rejected parts slapped on NR receiver.

Shipping saga with folders means TI is actually doing inspections before shipping. Even considering the possibility that TI brought extras (tenda), they might run out of folders to ship preorders if rejection ratio is higher than anticipated.

To be clear, I have never claimed these were pla rejects or made from rejected parts. Others may have claimed that, but not me.

I personally think these were just not quality inspected across a significant sample size. TI claims they inspected 80 rifles, but we have no idea what they looked for, apart from ensuring compliant new manufacture trunions.

We don't know if they checked for things like hand fitting (ground bolts anyone?), Machining errors on rear sight leafs (like one guy reported) or for bent receivers or crooked woodwork.

They might simply not have noticed, or the 80 rifles they inspected were fine. We don't even know if it was a random sample or if the Chinese produced a pallet of 80 for inspection that were "representative" of the lot.

What we do know is that a handful of rifles have been reported here with significant flaws. Many more have been posted where customers seem happy.

What accuracy issues? It's a 35 year old chinese military rifle that shoots surplus ammo as old or older. What were you expecting for accuracy. Mine seems to be about the same as my SKS and that's all I was expecting from it.

Well I have a dial gage ready.

Just don't be unreasonable with your expectations. The receivers are stamped sheet metal, I doubt any t81 has perfectly parallel rails within a few thousandths. Stamped sheet steel will never be as dimensionally consistent as machined steel. Really, a misaligned trunion is just a cosmetic issue if the rifle cycles ok. The sights are both mounted to the barrel, and accuracy should generally not be affected by a negligible misaligent.

That said, if mine ends up being visibly bent, it's going back, but I'm not going to put it on my surface plate with a dial test indicator, or mount it in the 4 jaw to record runout. It's not a blueprinted bench rest rifle.

Well, it's not 35 years old, it was just built this year.

My Vz shoots 2 MOA with barnaul ammo. So I was expecting it to be worse than Vz but better than SKS. Considering that mine has handfitted bolt, yea, not expecting much here anymore.

Barrel looks fine to me. It is possible theres a slight angle with the stock yhough, but not enough for me to care/notice.

Obviously you have the gun in front of you. Here is what I saw after you posted your picture,

that is not the barrel nor the action bent but the stock ... it is to help right handers to meet the target .... what else to expect from a communist country with cheap labor ....
