CQBR / Mk18 Mod1 Clone thread - Show us your clones!

like 84wh1 said. most have either a red or green laser version with the illuminator being a typical white light, and some do offer IR capability. how well the IR works i don't know, i imagine there would be atrocious bloom if my green laser version is any indicator. i don't know about all versions, but i highly doubt it will hold a zero. the adjustment dials are barely spring loaded with what feels like a bic pen spring and no detents. i can push the adjustment dial down like a push button and see the green laser move from 5'' left to right at like 10'. i imagine it will easily walk itself off target rather quickly.

please Don't look into that beam. the whole reason mil models are not for civilian sale is due to the fact that they are not eye safe and won't cause your eye to blink. since you can't "see" the laser as it damages your eyes. these chinese copies are known to far exceed the power output even listed on their own advertisements and i wouldn't want to be staring down a unregulated, untested chinese knock off laser. if you want to test its IR capabilities, grab your cellphone or webcam and point the laser at that. they are all IR sensitive and it will appear as a purple bloom.

this is a 250 lumen light through an IR filter. this would hurt to stare into in white light. notice how bright the photo is, meaning this is not pumping enough light to overpower the ambient light

now the LOW POWER civilian legal eye safe PEQ
Illuminator. (notice the more intense point, also causing a lens flare. the background it darker, indicating the illuminator is starting to overpower ambient light)

Now the EYE SAFE laser

the background is black. it's easily overpowering ambient light. now compare that to the first 250 lumen photo. my point is this is the tested FCC approved eyesafe real version. dont point the knockoff at your eye, it could be orders of magnitude brighter than this and could damage your sight.

Good tip my friend. I never actually looked directly into the "beam" in IR mode. More off angle I would say. Saying that, I 100% agree that about not looking directly into the IR beam. That's limited to window lickers.

There are exceptions to every rule my friend. Haha

In all seriousness I myself just cant justify the cost for seomthingni I would never actually use. Now if they were like 5-600 bucks I could live with that. But at 2k, that's too much for a nobility (for me at least)

yeah 2 k for photos is really steep. i would like to try nvgs eventually, so this gives me a better reason to. theres a odd price disparity with rifle lasers. it goes from 100 garbage to 2000 military stuff. im surprised theres no midrange option. although even if there was, i'd still go peq15 because clone and all.

Here is my take on the MK18.......

Specs:

-DD MK18
-B5 Sopmod stock
-A2 grip
-PRI gas buster CH
-Eotech XPS2
-Magpul BUIS (I do plan to swab for KAC when I can find some for less than the cost of black market kidney)
-Tango down stubby VG
-Surefire War Comp (Surefire Warden enroute as we speak)
-Insight M3X weapon light
-FAKE AIRSOFT PEQ15

I know its not clone correct and all but im not that picky. I got some good EE deals with this rifle so I will enjoy the fatter wallet in lieu of being exactly clone correct. LOL

I’ve seen some pretty decent knock off Steiner and Surefire laser units.

They go for about 300-500$ for a upgraded laser/light the quote I got was “Standard 5 mW power version cost 480USD.“ (DBal)

2 friends own them shoot with them on their ARs. And both had no issues after 5+ years of use.

I wouldn’t stake my life on one, but for a range toy, why not

Were MK18 rifles ever deployed with Troy sights? Reason I ask is because KAC sights are unobtanium and bloody expensive where as a set of troys can easily be had for 200 bones on the EE.....

Yup, but they were the ones used by Army Special Forces CQBRs/ and or AFSOC PJ's

KAC Taupe on the front and Matech rear
seems to be an good option.. this is my next purchase for sure !!!

So I find myself obsessed with building a clone. can anyone tell me if there are more reasonable priced parts that an be had which are similar in appertain to the dd stuff. In particular the handguard/rail. I can not afford 300 or more for a hand guard. Any help is greatly appreciated. Love the builds here in the thread. Bad ass stuff boys.

If a new RISii is out of your budget, keep your eyes on the EE. There was a black RISii selling for like 300 shipped which is decent. Another option (but not clone correct) is to look for a DD Lite rail on the EE. You can make a pretty decent clone using the Lite rail.

Now since its all said, I really think the RISii is sort of the heart and sole of the MK18. You can get away with using different receivers and BCG and such and no one would be the wiser, but the rail is a dead give away. I would try and save for the RISii. The gun dealer in mcadam NB sells the RISii in FDE for 375. Best price you will find for a new one
