Tavor FAQ (updated 08 December, 2008)

Interesting stuff indeed. So, I hit the range today to try to convince my Tavor to feed. PMAG inserted, no feed, but bolt cycled correctly. Removed mag, tried to reseat. Mag didn't seat properly and couldn't feed (entirely different than the partial feed from earlier this week). Switched to the stock IWI mag. Same issue. Moved to a third metal mag with only 4 rounds. Nada. Now getting upset with said rifle.
Tried swearing on it. Tried pleading with it. Prayed to Yahweh, you know, seeing as this is Israeli made. Finally I did what I learned in the Infantry. I applied more force than needed to overcome an obstacle. Tap, rack, bang (with far more tap than needed). Magazine seated (with a click I never heard before), round fed. Fired off PMAG no trouble. Then another. Then another. I was unable to reproduce my FTF. All mags worked fine, 50 rounds without an issue.
I'm not sure what happened. I usually seat my mags with more force than needed so why this seemed to get things moving again this one time I am unsure. Hoping this doesn't happen again. Still, I will say I love this rifle. Very comfortable to shoot...when it shoots.

I've noticed with some mags, I need to lock the bolt back before inserting the mag, otherwise it doesn't properly seat, and a round doesn't get chambered when I rack it. This has been especially true with IMI LAR pistol mags.

I'm not sure if this will help, but you can also try giving the magwell a thorough clean and then Frog-lubing it (heat, treat, let sit for 30min then wipe off). A lot of times I find if the magazine won't seat properly (usually with LAR15s) you need to remove a round or two, really give it a whack or load on an open vs. closed bolt.

I've noticed with some mags, I need to lock the bolt back before inserting the mag, otherwise it doesn't properly seat, and a round doesn't get chambered when I rack it. This has been especially true with IMI LAR pistol mags.
I'm noticing a trend here...

yeah, The mag the Tavor ships with will NOT let me insert it with a closed bolt.
It depends where the rivets/crimps are, way too much spring pressure.

To PastorOfMuppets, I probably should've asked if you were inserting on a closed bolt...
When I insert fully loaded mags, I generally lock the bolt back before inserting because the spring pressure is really strong when the bolt is closed, making it hard to fully seat the mag. Sometimes it feels seated but it's not fully locked in. In your case the mag might have been held in place with friction from the mag release alone.
Perhaps that was the issue you were having. As I said, the mag it ships with will not seat on a closed bolt, not even if I whacked it with a rubber mallet. The 5 rd crimp on the mag is exactly at 5 rds, not 5.5 which would give the follower a little wiggle room.
Next time you hit the range, try locking you bolt back before inserting and listen for that click. If it fired everytime, then its most likely just overcoming the stiff spring tension in your mags

Most magazines available to the civilian shooting market, either for the Tavor, AR 15, or any similar platform, have been modified from a prohibited 30 round capacity, to accept a legal "tight" 5. Either by pinning, punching or other means. STANAG, Lancer, PMags, etc. almost all will have difficulty seating on a closed bolt rifle. Even some LAR magazines can be tight. There needs to be some room in the magazine for the rounds to be depressed down when being seated on a closed bolt.

As the owner of a Tavor, I had to adjust all the magazines I use for sport competitions.

Your best choice is to adjust the magazine to hold either 5.5 or 5.75 rounds, so it may seat and lock easily on a closed bolt. Further adjustment may also be needed with filing on the exposed rivet head to permit the magazine to drop free during quick mag changes.

Even in the training environment I work in, some new students may in error try to stuff 31 rounds into a 30 round magazine (SOP 28rds). The student, having failed to load the magazine into the closed bolt rifle, is now desperately clubbing it like a baby seal, hoping for it to lock into place. Quick correction and lesson soon learned...too much is too tight!

Hey guys. Is there a tavor parts kit out there for sale? What parts usually break first and require maintenance?

Was thinking of grabbing a spare firing pin, extractor and recoil spring maybe.

Found and installed my Galloway Precision X-95 Angled Shell Deflector

I went in the opposite direction of most, and I find my faux-IDF config to feel noticeably slimmer and lighter. It also makes pulling the barrel a much simpler process, and the barrel/optic comes off as one unit.

I was VERY close to trying to go "Full IDF" with mine. I had concerns for application with hunting I wanted to address...
The back up irons are for the pic, they will be coming off.
The optic is a 1-4 with a 223 reticle good for 400 yards.
The muzzle break and shell are for trying to keep it a little less painful for my ears if one rips in and I dont have my ears on.
The Keymod fore end is just because it was a good deal! 20 bucks!

Using the black metal steel ones with no issue, Follower is orange.

I also have 6 LAR-15 black steel mags with orange followers and have never had an issue either.
But it is really tight to install a full mag with the bolt closed, I usually lock it open before loading or put 9 rounds in my first mag.
