Opinion on the Valmet Hunter

Sweet! How did you get the front handguard retainer on? I originally cut it in half, welded it back on and then broke it so I ordered a bolt on and thats what I am using currently.

Uh, not sure what you mean... i dont see anything to 'cut in half'?

Are you talking about one of these parts?

On the right side. My original plan was cutting it in half and then carefully welding it back together while its on the barrel. It actually worked perfectly except I broke the little handle after a while from repeatedly trying to test the barrel notch.

Oh, you pop the gas block off, and sleeve it on to where it needs to go, then put the gas block back on. This is easier typed than done though :)

Since the M88 barrel doesn't have a notch, you have to be EXTREMELY careful and precise as to where you notch it!

I'm thinking of sending my barrel to a place where they can duplicate it, for when I do something stupid and break it, to have a replacement ready... I haven't seen that many 'valmet' 308 barrels laying around

I'm also uncertain how my rifle will end up looking like... a Galil ARM, or a Romanian PSL (i got NOS furniture for one)... oh, if only I had two to work on :). The PSL would likely involve cutting in the receiver to fit the stock...

Also,

finding mags for M88's is all but impossible. It's not even a question of price... they're just not available :(

Tried to fit VEPR 308 mags, worked, but for 4 round capacity. M14 mags might work in an M78 receiver, but not in an M88 one... ugh

I'd give my central nut for a 5/10 or 5/20 M88 mag.

I'm really starting to think that this image was photoshopped:

Oh, and apparently someone in Ontario had a 7.32x39 hunter that takes normal AK mags...wow

The 223 magwell is the same, that's why the 223 -> 7.62x39 conversion is so easy. I have an ex-hunter that I converted to 7.62x39 (and regular ak mags do work as is), but I use an AR magwell adapter so I can have 10rd mags.

Pretty sure everyone has seen it at some point but here it is again. I'm _still_ tinkering with the stock adapter!

Nice adapter.. home made? I've been thinking about it, but, so much work. I wish someone out there made and sold these, they'd make $$ :)

I have a full time job and a farm - not too much free time for things like this, but if I ever get this to the point where I'm not ashamed to accept money for it, I'll let you know...

I'm not sure there's money to be made for anything but an extra beer here and there, machining is expensive...

oh, I have beer to give :)

I have a friend that got a 3d printer.. I'll probably start modeling a similar adapter and print out plastic versions until the right one works, then send it to be machined somewhere.

PM me when you start - maybe I can help a bit and it'll give me a push to keep going.

3d printing is what I've been doing too. I only pay for materials for my 3d prototypes - the biggest difficulty is finding free time in a large enough chunk to sit down make the next version etc... I'm at a stage where I actually spoke with a machinist and he requested several modifications to make the machining cheaper and easier.

We had those in Canada????

Prohib now though. Valmet's the only game in the _village_.

Ironically, I have LOTS of time.. lol. But I will. At least I have a negative blank to start off with (my hunter receiver and its stock, err, stock :) )

I wish I had one of those laser 3d scanners... that would be SOOOO much faster.

The norinco hunters were a great gun. I never understood why the valmat remained unrestricted and the norinco hunter became prohibited! Other than quality, they are the same gun. The valmet 223
rifles were really well made and shot well, now prohibited also

Because Norinco hunters were cheap and readily available at the time the ban came. Had they been exempted like the Valmet Hunter, everybody would buy one and have a non-restricted AK (in 7.62x39 with a milled receiver to boot). This would pretty much make the the AK ban pointless. And .223 Valmets are not all prohibited. Plenty of .223 Hunters and M78's around.
