I had a 12 gauge SxS Stevens given to me, Full and Modified I assume. I'm in need of a skeet gun, so I'm going to lop a couple of inches off the barrels(if legal). I'd still have 28" barrels with a cylinder choke, so I don't foresee a problem.
If this isn't a viable solution, what's an economical skeet gun, presumably with screw in chokes but would prefer fixed.

Nice!! Let's see some pictures.

The price was so good, because the former owner cut about 1-1/2" off of the stock to shorten it. The piece was later reattached, and you have to look close to see the seam. The cutting and rejoining left the LOP about 1/8" shorter than it was, but it dropped the price to about 40% of what the gun sold for new about a year ago.

One. But it's a nice one. Custom made in Spain after I visited the maker. 12 gauge on a 16 gauge frame, 6-1/2 lbs. choke SK and LM, 28" barrels. Nice wood that fits because it was made for me. Never say never but I've looked at many other sxs but can't justify dropping 4 or 5 figures to get something as good or a few hundred on a gun that I won't like as much or shoot as well.

At present, I have 3 only. But, I may add one more yet. I somewhat broke from tradition a bit, in that mine are all steel rated and 3`chambers and have interchangeable chokes, all 3 are SST. Two Fabarm Classis in 12ga and a CZ Ringneck in 20. That was what was available on the market at the time, that would give me what I wanted for waterfowling. Just no twin trigger guns around to be had at the time, that met the specs I wanted in them.

I just came upon this poll:
1 - .38-55 sxs that started out as a W&S 12 bore gun
1 - 16x16x.303 Br. drilling (does that count?)
1 - 24 gauge sxs with .410 inserts
2 - 12 gauge guns (both need restoring)
1 - 10 gauge Greener

My SxS family increased by one. My AYA numbers 2s are gone, replaced by a 16 gauge Grulla 216RB, and a 28 gauge Grulla Consort. I added a 20 gauge Huglu SxS with English stock and double triggers for those rainy days , when I don't want to take out a Grulla.

Curious as to whether or not the 30% with no SxS would like one or not?

I am one of the 0 votes. I would like to own a nice SxS one day, but that day is far off unless I find a screaming deal on a known quantity.

ISSF/CISM pistol shooting is my main focus, followed by casual but frequent PPC and Trap shooting, casual and less frequent clays & skeet, and finally a few days of generally unsuccessful hunting per year. When all is said and done a nice SxS just doesn’t fit my priorities yet. As I age and lose all hope of being competitive I’ll most likely drop pistols to spend more time hunting and then re-evaluate.

The other problem I encounter is a lack of personal knowledge. There are so many manufacturers, many defunct, over such a long period I find it difficult to determine the good/bad/ugly.

It's actually not hard. What you have to learn to do is to judge the gun, not the maker. And that's not that hard. There are things to learn. But it's not as easy as remembering the name Browning, for example. After 15 years of going at vintage SxS hard, I constantly run into makers I've never heard of before. But that doesn't stop me from assessing the qualities of the gun that mystery name is on.

You make it sound so simple! With experience everything is, but I’m at 0. My game plan, when the day comes, is to find help from those who posses the knowledge. Or just stalk you and a bunch of CGNer’s like you and pick up your sloppy seconds.

TT1900 I was more or less where you are a few months ago. So I posted a thread and outlined what I was thinking about and what my parameters were. The most important thing is to balance knowing what you want to do with not getting bogged down with dogma, something we gun nuts tend to do. Maintain an open mind while remaining true to the end goal. Balance the desire for immediate gratification with the satisfaction you'll feel when you don't make a major compromise. And find knowledgeable people that you can trust to take advice from. Canvasback is smart and knows his doubles. So do others. But some don't know ####. Another balancing act.

That's good advice from BUM.

Do yourself a favour. PM VictoryXC and ask him how he got over the knowledge hump and bought his first SxS a few years ago. Lots of people here willing to help those who are actually interested.

Somewhere on here is a thread a number of us contributed to that's a great starting point for learning what to look for when shopping for a SxS.
