Shot a few groups of 44.0 - 45.0 Varget over 165 Hornady IB, 165 Sierra GK, and 168gr Amax
Was very impressed to see 2550-2600fps with ES in the 20s, 3 shot groups around 5.” Center to Center and 5 shout groups under 1” with 2.5x scout scope off bipod.

Such a fun rifle, haven’t carried it in the bush yet, but will soon.

How long are those bullets you're using? Using 44.5gr of Varget under 150gr TTSX I'm seeing around 2750fps out of my 18.7" bbl scout.

I slapped on the terrifyingly named Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6 that I found in my gun room to see how I liked it. I was forced to mount it way further back than I prefer as it was bumping on the XS rear peep sight. So I may end up going with another scope. 308 doesn't recoil much though, so maybe it's not a big deal. :)

what is the effective range you guys are able to get at 300m with a scout scope I tried for the first time today and I wasn't on paper. Also using 180gr winchester, I want to keep trying and practicing for that range to get an effective grouping. Am I asking to much of my scout Scope(vortex) or do i req to reload or buy the really expensive ammo to get what I want.

Your scope just needs to be adjusted to hit at 300.

I zeroed at 100 I had 2 targets up one above the over aimed at the top target. Saw one hit paper just at top of bottom target. At 200 I aim at the top of one target and get just around centre of same target and unfortunately the rest of the target was to full of holes next time I’m going to bring a sheet of bristle board to be able to aquires my rounds better. I just didn’t know if I am asking to much of the scope I know the rifle can do it no problem my max I would want to shoot is 300 the 100 and 200 are easy

I've shot ten round 5" groups @ 300y with the 2.5x scout scope, so the scope is capable of decent precision when the target is large enough to see

A 16.1" 308 shooting factory 180gr will likely be in the 2350 fps ballpark. Zero'd @ 100 yards, drop @ 300y would be about 20"

Any quality off-the-shelf ammo will get you reasonable hits at 300 meters in a reasonable rifle. 4 MOA at 300 meters is a 12 inch circle....and if your rifle/ammo combo is shooting over 4 MOA then you either have a serious rifle issue or you are using terrible (surplus?) ammo.

What was your holdover at 300, and what are you zero'd at?

This is exactly where you want to start asking questions.

Your scope just needs to be adjusted to hit at 300.

Nope. Unless you have an external elevation turret intended to be adjusted on the fly, don't go making scope adjustments to compensate for your range.

When I took Rifle 270 at Gunsite, I had no problem getting reliable hits on a 10" plate at 400 yards using a 1.5-5X IER scope. That re-calibrated my thoughts on "effective range" for that optic and rifle combo....so I decided to play around at 600 yards a month later. I was able to get reliable hits on steel at 600 yards....so 300 yards is definitely not asking too much of a quality scout scope mounted on a quality rifle.

My suggestion for a Scout rifle is to zero it at 200 yards. That means that with a .308, where your bullet lands will be no more than 2 inches away from where your crosshairs are all the way from the muzzle out to 225 yards. When you get out beyond 225 yards, then you can hold over manually. At 300 yards, a 168 grain bullet will have dropped about 8 inches...so if you hold on the top edge of an 8 1/2" x 11" target, the center of your group should be 2 to 3 inches below the center of the paper. If you keep your zero at 100 yards, that means your bullet drop will be about ten inches....thus aiming at the top edge of that same target will yield a group centered just above the bottom edge.

And while I'm at it, I guess I should post a pic or two of my Ruger Scout-shaped object. First in the original laminate stock with a Galco Safari Ching Sling and a Leupold VX-R 1.5-5X33mm IER scope:

After installing a Ruger factory synthetic stock, replacing the flash hider, and upgrading to a biothane Rhodesian sling from Andy's Leather:

And being run during Rifle 270 at Gunsite:

Love the rig! Since you have experience with both, why would you say Andy's sling is an upgrade over Galco's? I find my Andy's sling to be a pain in the proverbial neck to use since it's so slippery for carrying on my shoulder.
