I am currently shooting a 6.5 Creed, it’s great for PRS (haven’t shot a match yet)but wish I could stretch it out farther. I should get a second precision rifle but don’t really want to bust out another 10g. What about 284 win for PRS and steel out to 1600m?
Not sure if you have tried, but the 6.5 Creedmoor and a suitable bullet will have no issue reaching 1 mile.
Now if you prefer a larger bullet, the 7mm is a gem. The 284 is a wonderful cartridge that is ubber popular in LR F class... and that goes out to 1000yds in NA, 1200yds in the UK/Ireland. Again, with the right bullet, no problem to get to a mile and will be less fussy in the winds vs the typical 6.5 140gr bullet. I am going to experiment with the 150/152 6.5s this summer in hopes to get decent LR ballistics with less recoil.
I assume when you say PRS, you mean the ELR matches south of the border? These typically start around 800yds and can reach out to 2000yds. There was one in Eastern WA that went out to 1500+yds in March. A 7mm would have been an excellent choice for this type of match. I compete with PRS shooters who have built big 7mms and 30 cals for this event... unfortuntely, tuning was not in their favor.
But with a mag fed rig, you need to consider feeding and mag capacity. The 284 is not the ideal cartidge in your typical 308 type mag... It might work in a 300WM mag???
I prefer to use the 280 and 280AI cartridge. Equally accurate, easier to feed and fit in a mag with decent capacity.
I have shot back to back a 6.5 Mystic pushing 140gr Bergers to 2935fps vs a 7 Mystic pushing a 180gr Berger at 2825fps at 1000m. In higher winds, there was no comparison. The 7mm was sooo much easier to drive. Don't get me wrong, the 6.5 was very effective and accurate but the 7mm bounced around so much less.
A LR rig doesn't have to cost 10k to be effective... you can build a superb shooting rig for 40% of that easily. Even less if not looking for alot of "jam labels".
