I am currently shooting a 6.5 Creed, it’s great for PRS (haven’t shot a match yet)but wish I could stretch it out farther. I should get a second precision rifle but don’t really want to bust out another 10g. What about 284 win for PRS and steel out to 1600m?

F-class and PRS are quite different.
Any of the typical 6.5 cartridges will equal or shooting flatter/less wind then the 284 with less powder and recoil.
And most PRS matches max out at 1200yds or thereabouts. Canadian matches even less.

Not sure if you have tried, but the 6.5 Creedmoor and a suitable bullet will have no issue reaching 1 mile.

Now if you prefer a larger bullet, the 7mm is a gem. The 284 is a wonderful cartridge that is ubber popular in LR F class... and that goes out to 1000yds in NA, 1200yds in the UK/Ireland. Again, with the right bullet, no problem to get to a mile and will be less fussy in the winds vs the typical 6.5 140gr bullet. I am going to experiment with the 150/152 6.5s this summer in hopes to get decent LR ballistics with less recoil.

I assume when you say PRS, you mean the ELR matches south of the border? These typically start around 800yds and can reach out to 2000yds. There was one in Eastern WA that went out to 1500+yds in March. A 7mm would have been an excellent choice for this type of match. I compete with PRS shooters who have built big 7mms and 30 cals for this event... unfortuntely, tuning was not in their favor.

But with a mag fed rig, you need to consider feeding and mag capacity. The 284 is not the ideal cartidge in your typical 308 type mag... It might work in a 300WM mag???

I prefer to use the 280 and 280AI cartridge. Equally accurate, easier to feed and fit in a mag with decent capacity.

I have shot back to back a 6.5 Mystic pushing 140gr Bergers to 2935fps vs a 7 Mystic pushing a 180gr Berger at 2825fps at 1000m. In higher winds, there was no comparison. The 7mm was sooo much easier to drive. Don't get me wrong, the 6.5 was very effective and accurate but the 7mm bounced around so much less.

A LR rig doesn't have to cost 10k to be effective... you can build a superb shooting rig for 40% of that easily. Even less if not looking for alot of "jam labels".

Why not look at having a switch barrel rifle made? As long as the same boltface is possible so something like 6.5 CM and 284 Win you can have the best of both worlds but still use the same action, stock and trigger. Not all actions is this a viable option, but with some it certainly is.

This is the best option in my opinion. If you are going to build a proper, dual purpose rifle then you can't really do it with a single caliber. Looking back at this now, I would go with an action that has an easily interchangeable bolthead (a quick google search will return you a good selection), and a few barrels. That way, as no-one special pointed out, you just buy one chassis/stock, one good optic/rings/base, a good trigger, run the SA caliber for PRS out of a 10 round mag and run a LA/Magnum/SAUM (?) caliber single feed or SA mag is you can :D Just a thought, and i know Rugby Dave loves this idea.

We do quite a few switch barrels now on our actions. We have 1 built that has 3 different bolt faces to accommodate 308 Win, 300 Win Mag and 338 Lapua.
The whole rig fits into 1 standard 53" hard case.

Many are, in fact two of the three guys who currently have 300 points are running 6.5x47L. The 2017 PRS Finale match was won with a 6.5x47L as were a number of matches.

Amazing EH ! Thxs for the Great answer -Thats all that i was asking BUT some other " KNOW it ALL " members here seem to think different ! Cheers RJ

The guy you called an AH has shot in several local matches and sanctioned matches in the US and is one of the best shooters in Alberta. He isnt just a "know it all". He actually does know what he is talking about.

He gave you his honest opinion.

Probably because you project yourself like a child in this thread. I personally can't blame the guy for being a smart ass.

He gave a very valid reason in his original response to you. The increased recoil of the .284 far outweighs any ballistic benefit that it would provide. The majority of targets in PRS matches are between 300-600 yards. There's a reason why there's a big push to 6mm cartridges in PRS and NRL matches.
