Norinco NP29 M-1911A1 9mm Pistol

When I owned a few Norinco pistols in both 9mm and 45 cal, I loved the MecGar brand magazines. I bought them at M A r St A R (banned dealer) ... then I sold those and tried a bunch of ten rounder Wilson magazines from Brownells. Both brands worked well. I have no complaints !!

The mailman was here with my new NP29. It's probably going to be a keeper, but it's going to need some work. The plastic mainspring housing has to go for starters, and it desperately needs a tighter barrel bushing, but the 9mm barrel OD is smaller than a normal 1911 barrel, so I might need a new barrel too. And neither of the factory mags lock the slide back on the last round. I've got some mecgar 10 rounders waiting at the post office for me though, so hopefully they'll work properly. No point using the stock 9 rounders in IPSC anyway.

Here's the first couple mags from 8 yards, not terrible I guess. I picked up my new mags and tried a couple, they both locked back when empty, so that's a good sign. I'll have to get a proper range session with this gun soon and based in that I can probably put in a Brownells order.

You will change the bushing not the barrel. Watch for peening in the slide cuts where the barrel meets the slide. Norcs have been known to have the wrong barrel link which can pose problems such as peening of the slide or barrel or the link itself breaks. I have seen both happen. Other than that they are solid pistols can can be made even better with a little TLC.

Thanks Bob, I'll have to check the link length to make sure it's right. I've done up a couple of other 1911's in 45, including fitting the barrel bushing, but this one has a barrel od of .495", not the more usual .580" range. My wife's SAM in 9mm has the same barrel od as a typical 45, and these are the only 1911's in 9mm I've ever played with, so I don't know which one is the typical way of doing things. I don't recall ever seeing bushings for sale that would work with my barrel, so I'm guessing that's not the typical way to build a 9mm. EGW is willing to cut a bushing for me, but not ship it to Canada.

I have had one for a while, took on trade, I think, It always works, It is not a pin gun like a couple I have ,that have been reworked.
But I think they are the best value out their, if you like steel, which I do.
May tune it up some time, bushing is the main problem I see, and trigger not too bad, getting better with some rounds through it.
Only thing not stock is wrap a round rubbers grips on it , that I like
 
Anyone have a recommendation of a bushing to buy for the Norinco 1911 9mm variant that you’ve had success with? Is there a sponsor that has them on for a decent price?
 
Finally done another 2 week shift at work and can back to important things. I slugged my barrel today and it is .355", so that's good. I measured my barrel, slide, and bushing, and it's pretty bad. Barrel OD is .495", ID of the bushing is .504", OD of bushing is .689", ID of the slide is .701". Lots of room to tighten that up. Lug engagement looks to be about .022", so I'll have to pull the link and measure it.

I bought a couple of Fusion 1911 barrel bushings at Practical Performance Products for my NP29s for $35 (incl. tax):

Installs onto the slide with a very tight snug fit but a bit of fitting work is required in order for the barrel to be able to slide into the bushing.

OK new question about my Norinco 1911, what would be a good adjustable rear sight for it?

It shoots 6-7 inch groups at 20 yards right now but I think with better rear sights it could be better
and that's the question I have, is there a plug-n-play rear adjustable sight for this gun that doesn't require a
gunsmith to install?

I don't know of any adjustable ones that don't require machining. I bought a fixed MGW rear sight that's supposed to replace a GI rear, and it doesn't fit my NP29. It's close, and looks like it just needs a bit of file work to open up the dovetail.

What about the front sight? Is that hard to replace?
 
I'm happy with mine other than the sights. Mine shoots 2" high and left at 40ft. I can push the rear over but not sure what to do with elevation.
Mec gar mags work fine in these.
 
You can try filing down the rear site. Just take it easy and touch it up with some cold blue when you get the height right. According to the chart in the Kuhnhausen book you'll need to remove about .025".
