375 Ruger Brass

I used to have a Sako Hunter IV in 375 H&H but sold it to a buddy that hunted with it a lot more than I ever did. I have now replaced it with a s/s Rem 700 black/gray laminate and an optional synthetic stock in 375 RUM. I get 3020fps with 260gr Accubonds and reduced the 300gr Partitions to 2750fps due to not needing to deal with anymore recoil than nessasary.

If I was going to do it again and the 375 Ruger was available I would definately consider getting the Ruger due to it having more than enough power for everything that I will ever hunt.

With that said though the next question would be would I get rid of my 375 RUM and replace it with the reduced performance of the 375 Ruger?

Absolutely no way...

Sorry Gatehouse the 375 Ruger maybe good but it is definately not the new king... :D

It maybe a Queen but that is as close as it will ever get... :p

The 375 RUM has lots of velocity, not neccesarily a great thing in a 375 caliber cartridge...You said it yourself when you said that you didn't want to deal wiht the recoil- not to mention that penetration with some bullets would be compromised, few people need he RUM velocities to shoot past 400 yards, more powder used, etc etc.

The 375 RUM is not, and will never be, the King of 375's. The 375 H&H is....and the Ruger will become the new King.

ALL HAIL THE NEW KING!!

I just don't get this velocity is bad argument. If that were the case why have a 300 WSM when a 308 is better. More speed/power is always better. Haveing said that, the new Ruger has plenty of speed for a 375. A bullet with a B.C. of around .4 and speed of around 2600 fps has all the trajectory you need to hit at any senceable range. As Gate has said it should be a great round for standard actions and will bring more affordable .375 power once its established. I've got one H&H now and quess what I'm building next? Stainless CRF Mod. 70 in.........H&H.

The 378 WBY is king!

I don't think velocity is bad 100% of the time- far form it. But when it's not necessary, all it does is add recoil and make shooters flinch more!:)

Most 375 caliber rifles are not fired at game much past 300 yards. So if we use Camp Cooks figures of a 260 gr Accubond at 3020 (presumably for a 22-24" barrel) and compare it with the 375 Ruger 270 factory load at 2840 from the 23" African barrel we see a difference of 180fps. Is this extra 180fps important within 300 yards, is the question- and only the indivdual can answer it for themselves. For H&H users, it has never been important;)

Anyway, velocity doesn't make a cartridge KING..Otherwise the 300RUM or 30-378 Weatherby or the 300 Lazzeroni Death Eagle would be the king of the .308 calibers, and as Supercub pointed out-The 30-06 is still the KING of the .30 calibers!:D

So...any plans to hunt any critters with that .375 Ruger of yourn? Are you bookin' a trip to Africky an take down on some 'o them thar hippopotamusks, rinocerases an caped buffaloes such? Seems like thats what that big Ruger was made fer shootin', son.

I hope to get to Africa in a couple of years, and for sure I will take the Mighty 375 Ruger.:dancingbanana:

Until then, I will definitely use it on black bears, if I get a grizz draw, and maybe on a moose- Or anything else, really.:dancingbanana:

I would imagine the Mighty all powerful .375 Ruger would make short work of black bears and such :D Everbody keeps yodelling about the cartridges performance  but how about the Ruger Alaskan's "feel"? How would you describe it? Do you think the African model with the 23" pipe might be more in line for all around use?

Actually, I think the more compact Alaskan model is better for all around use. For me in BC, anyway. That shorter barrle sure is handy, wish I had it a few years ago when I was on a grizz hunt in the thick coastal forest!

It feels very good- Jumps to your shoulder nicely and feels good to shoot.

Thats what I was waiting to hear :) A practical description, not some gun writers analysis. Sounds like you have a new fun-gun Gatehouse, albeit a very powerful and Mighty one at that :D

After a bit more thought I totally see the advantages of the 375 Ruger and may have to buy one to complement my 375 RUM...

My 375 RUM gives awesome performance but I use it more for longer range shooting situations whereas I would use a 375 Ruger for close in thick cover where shots would be max 200 yards.

What I'm saying is I can totally see the advantages of a shorter standard length bolt throw with a short 20" to 22" barrel.

I may have to buy myself another rifle/catridge combo... :)

I bought these cases for $1.06 each. WSS lists 375 RUM brass at $1.09, and H&H at $ 0.80, so it's in the ball park. I htik that we will see a bit of a price reduction as it gets more popular.
I am drooling at the thought of a range report:evil:

Once fired .375 ruger cases have been selling on ebay already. in the $.50 ea range i think. Seems like there's quite a bit of interest in this cartridge in the U.S.

A lot of us didn't buy-in to the short / ultra short / super short / ultra super short / BS. But the .375 Ruger might appeal to both traditionalists and the fad lovers. And it fits in a 30-06 length action so its going to be a natural for re-barrelling old betsy when she needs a facelift.

Buying a new rifle is always good for any reason, of course> :D But in real terms a 375 RUM probably has a 10% or less advantage over a .375 ruger or H&H. Which might translate into 20-25 yds extended range before hold-over is required. Beauty is mostly in the eye of the beholder.

Let me explain a little more clearly what I meant...

I have my RUM set up with a 4.5 -14X VX111 B/C reticle scope for long range shooting...

I would set the Ruger up with the factory iron sights and at the most a 1-4X scope with quick dettachable rings...
