Reimagining the Rook rifle, an all Canadian custom 3.75lb 5.6x50 Magnum

Where do you buy these gorgeous blanks? If stateside is there any thing specail about getting slabs and blanks up here?

Over ten years ago I bought a pallet from a specialty mill who cut mainly for musical instruments, he’s no longer in business but still emails me about really special pieces he comes across. He knows what they’re worth unfortunately, but I’m grateful just wish there was more. Don’t want to invest the effort in less than ideal pieces, no special arrangements needed to import. Pretty easy to spend ten grand on a very small pile of wood though be warned when walking around with a spray bottle of isopropyl. :d There’s blank sellers at some of the US trade shows too.

nice photo from the chopper! Do you often fly your stocks up for a photo shoot?

I probably do 2/3rds of the work making it leaning out my door in that seat on the ground, waiting for pickups / drops etc, so she just rides along and I sand away on the ground.

21” for sure.

I’m of the mind 22” would be perfect, but will try 23” and likely settle there. It can use the little extra barrel burning a reasonable amount of powder for a wee round.

Well the butt’s getting an unconventional version of it Simon,

Well seeing as how this is all opinion anyway, I think that bead blasted stainless is a better option than an aluminum skeleton butt plate. I suppose that if you put one on the butt, you'll need a pistol grip cap as well.

Normally I’d agree but too heavy for this build, want to remain under 4lbs and every ounce matters. The aluminum weighs roughly what the walnut it’s replacing would.

So you will inlet the skeleton pad? If so, leave the checkering proud by a 1/16" or so, or at least the depth of the groove... I think that would an extremely classy addition... it looks great.

Yep would inlay around the edge of the butt, leaving just enough of the checker peaks proud to offer traction on the butt. I cut the aluminum blank this morning will eye it up and see if it’s something I want to tackle.

Looking forward to that... not my wood to screw-up (double pun acknowledged but not intended)... so I say "go for it!"

Load development for mountain goat hunting today, and damn is she ever powder charge sensitive. In a spread of 1.4grs, incrementally went from 4.25”, to 2.25”, to 0.75” groups. 0.1gr more tightened it up to 0.5”. Must be the 27” whip of a barrel, the harmonics are wild. Shoots lights out at the hottest load mind you, 1/2” with the 70gr GMX ripping along at .224 Wby speed from a rifle that weighs less than 4lbs is good enough for me!
