Reimagining the Rook rifle, an all Canadian custom 3.75lb 5.6x50 Magnum

Forgot I had a second project here, Mauser Type A Oberndorf commercial sporter I’m stocking too. So here’s a scale pic, Type A is 24”.

I made a stock once out of eastern maple, I know how hard the inletting can be. I had no trouble shaping the stock, I found that part fairly easy. I also checkered it, some find checkering hard, you just need lots of patience. Nice job btw.

Thanks Pete, that it is, and Maple is a real hard one.

Shot it today, promising, and shoots where you look very naturally. Lots to do on it still, but getting there. That’s with 50gr it’s not really suited for twist wise and off elbows, but I’ll take it. Off handed the 12” gong comfortably from 225 yards, she’s a natural.

Very nice... that barrel definitely needs to be bobbed some... you get a better perspective of the size seeing it shouldered.

She hangs out there a ways :d Will shoot it like this for awhile as the sights are dead on, and want to chrono a bunch of loads, will likely hunt it at 27” this year. Then next winter perhaps a shorten and chrono / group project at different lengths, likely down to around 22”.

Will measure a little later, she's in the back seat of the flying machine presently.

Edit, found a tape, 7 1/4” as presently stands. Considered taking it back to the quarter rib tip, right now it ends at the scope end objective of a 2-7x Leupold. You’d be holding barrel with it to the quarter rib end, but in keeping with the über light concept.

I wouldn't shorten it anymore... it looks balanced as is, IMO...

Coming along nicely... are you going to leave the wood a smidge proud of the receiver? Any more thought on a contrasting wood butt plate? PM your address and I will send you some nice cocobolo to play with.

Would look good and aluminum is enough for me, doubt I’ll do it but if I did would have to get a grip cap too.

"Self" or "Add-on."

Will do the checkering here in camp Greg. Had an epiphany on the takedown mechanism that I can’t believe I didn’t think of before, simple. Will have to do it but want to keep the secret for now, will text ya. ;)
