Reimagining the Rook rifle, an all Canadian custom 3.75lb 5.6x50 Magnum

Take full length broadside pics with a book over the muzzle end at 21", 23", 25", 27"... and then informally poll us...

I am being a little self-serving in this request... I just want to see what it looks like at those lengths... ;)

Challenge accepted and good idea, but I’ll start at 19”, I see you noticed my love of odd numbers. Especially primes, so fair to middling chance she’ll be 19, or 23 in the end after I see what the full blank length does in the field. I’ll get the fore end done and do those pics, will be awhile forends are slow.

Thanks :) It’s the most potent high velocity round you can fit in the mini Hagn action, gets its case capacity from length rather than diameter, and diameter is the constraint here. Keeps the breech face pressure down too, as the case head is .223 sized. In BC .224 is AOK for big game and while I’ll keep it in the reasonable size ranges, 78grs of mono going fast enough will do a lot around here in a package weighing 4lbs or less.

Start at 19", but 23" is my pick prior to seeing the resulting pictures... you get your prime number, and considering the action it will be a short, nimble package, at the same time 23" should ring out the bulk of the performance potential... that package has cool & classy all over it... and it is tough to combine those two traits.

To 320 grit today, liking the shape. Will likely test shoot tomorrow for the first time.

Looking good, another one worth more than my entire collection. Where do we sign up to get adopted?

Really good, best pointing and fitting rifle I’ve shouldered, should be though as a scratch build to suit. Would be few excuses if it didn’t feel right. :d Feels like a really good .22, light and snaps to target. Built it primarily for irons shooting with the comb angle but it has Talley mounts, and is reasonably comfortable scoped too. Points like a shotgun with the irons though in particular. I may have to do one of these as a shotgun in .410 down the road.

Hoping to test on vermin once the forend’s done.

Hey, better yet I’ll show you how to do it, just takes patience and an utterance of “Why the #### not?” to throw yourself off the cliff and start the project. Can build rifles for a fraction of what having them done for you costs. I’m into this for half what Martin or Ralf would charge to complete it for you. Totally fair their prices to be clear, for the hours involved, I just enjoy doing the work.

I'm good with shaping and finishing from a slab blank, but after buggering two expensive blanks trying to fit the tang cleanly and drill the hole for the anchor bolt... I get nervous at that stage... if "Tang fitment" is an option, I go that route.

I'm always impressed by clean tang fitment and proper alignment of the buttstock... 👍

19" & 20" are too short, gives the rifle a "clubby" look, 21" is ok, I think my preference would be 23" (as predicted)... looks, performance and you were keen on a prime number.

You've done some work on that forend...

Edit:

I will say it here too... I was torn between 21" & 23"... 22" might just be perfect for that piece... but if you force me to choose an odd number, I favour the 23" over the 21", for that classic "rook rifle" styling.

Damn does it look good at 21.

Awesome work Ardent, I can barely whittle a stick, but I appreciate the kind offer.

Can you take a picture next to ruger no 1 for scale?
