African game rifles in Canada?

When I originally bought the rifle from a retailer in Alberta I didn't know it was stainless. He just said he had an M70 in 375H&H that was hardly shot, and in excellent shape I took him on his word and bought it. It was then sent to Corlanes to get rebarrelled. When I got the invoice for the original purchase it said Winchester M70 Stainless Classic, I thought, neat, a stainless 404J is in the works! So far best groups are achieved when velocity is around 2150fps using 400gr bullets. I see the front sight got cut off in the picture. It is the same as you would find on a Ruger M77 or CZ 550.

Looks like a Unicorn!
Yes but she my unicorn. Don't think you will find another like it. Haven't seen one anyways. Not too often you can build a 404 Jefferey for less than $2400. That includes donor Winchester M70 rifle, new barrel, and gunsmith work!

Gah! All the neat stainless medium and big bores are coming out of the woodwork in this thread! Stop it I’m getting inspired. What’s your stock on that one Buckmastr if you don’t mind me asking?

That's a nice old Duggaboy!

Thank you, he was day 10 of 10, last crack at it. We were in the herd daily in dense thorns without sight lanes, as it had rained heavily ahead of schedule and greened up. They also didn’t have to concentrate at water, was hard, rewarding hunting. Would have gone home empty with a smile he was a bonus.

No they posted above, nothing dramatic happens with even a .505 Gibbs on smaller game. The bullets are just too stiff and generally pass right through without drama. A .223 will make a bigger mess of a baboon than a .375 H&H.

I still think that the 25-06 is possibly the greatest baboon rifle ever devised.

One day at the range, an older gentlemen was there sighting in a couple of rifles. One of which was a ruger no.1 that I believe he said was chambered in .458 win mag. Can't really remember which variation but I do remember him saying .458. It looked like he was stuffing hotdogs in the chamber compared to my .243 lol. Said it was his "deer rifle" lol. Now this ole gen't was about a 140 lbs soaking wet. I watched him shoot it twice ( don't think he could handle a third) and I couldn't believe the way his body reacted to the recoil. I think even his shoe laces were vibrating.I know he was loading his own ammo but I don't know if what I saw was normal or he was just loading her too hot. I never examined his cases after firing . I asked why he was using such a cannon or a deer rifle and he said the deal on the rifle was too good to pass up lol. The other rifle he had with him was a win model 70 in .325 wsm. The ruger made it look like a pussy cat . He fired the wsm several times.

Why would one hunt baboons?

They’re essentially the wolves of Africa but smarter and more deviant, halfway to a problem bear that runs in a pack and are ridiculously intelligent. They kill young game routinely and can be a severe nuisance. The one I hunted in Zim was ripping a camp apart, acting like a young black bear with way more brains and pace.

Sounds like an old fellow who couldn’t physically really get behind the rifle, though No.1s do have more felt recoil than most bolt guns as they’re usually lighter in the big chamberings. This said, they do kick a hell of a lot more than a .300 Mag. But, that said, it really isn’t too bad and .458 is no different than a light shotgun shooting slugs. Not for everyone but not other worldly either. The .505 and .450 in the video above are far worse.
