The T97 Thread!

This guy finally has a production version of his ambi magazine catch. The design looks great but I'm not sure about the materials. Maybe someone with better knowledge about these materiels can chime in.

They're made of machined Acetal with a zirconia insert for the actual bit that retains the magazine.

Acetal is apparently a tough, rigid polymer that is resistant to solvents, but that's about as much as I can understand.

He's got it priced at about what a Norgon Ambi-Catch costs. What does everyone think? Im probably going to get one just to give it a shot.

I just ended up custom fitting a ar15 ambi and made it a left side only release. I drilled out the original button and rethreaded it to fit us threads and it works as a locknut. I would never use the right sidecanyways being right handed. You can see it in the pics I just posted about the paint job.. What’s hecasking for those anyways ?

Does that work on Gen 1 or Gen 2?
Who is it from?

Its designed for a gen1, and while I don't see why it wouldn't work on a gen2, the gen2 already has a ambi mag catch.

They video uploader made them himself. He's looking for dealers but you can buy directly from him.

Update: Bought one, once it arrives, I'll let everyone know my initial impressions then proceed to give it some rough handling

I just ordered mine yesterday: I will know fairly soon!

PS. Anything will be a huge improvement over an enlarged pad with mine; It is so stiff and gritty, magazine changes are a real chore.

Cheers!

I have a Gen 2 and, having previously owned a Gen 1, I cannot see why it wouldn't be compatible.

Okay, just received one today and mounted it:

Huge improvement in my Gen 2!

Although a sucker for metal, I can't really see an issue here with the plastic - the transfer(?) portion of the release is guided, and in no danger of breaking.

The only real drawback, as I see it, is that the push button might potentially back-out of the threaded portion.

Should [strong] locktite be used, it might destroy the unit upon removal; this would have been the strength for a metal unit.

...At any rate, I can't wait to try it on the weekend.

Cheers!

Just got mine as well. Seems well machined and has a nice stiff spring. I wasn't able to unthread the button by hand once installed and under spring pressure, so I don't anticipate needing locktite (which was one of my concerns as well, as removing a locktite-d unit could possibly destroy it.)

Magazines lock in with a positive snap. Some quick testing confirmed that my mags that dropped free still drop free, and that the bolt still picks up a dummy round from all my magazines.

My concern is that it might now have the old L85A1 problem, as the latch protrudes from the receiver enough that it might hit equipment and drop the magazine by accident.
I threw on a chest rig and "patrolled" around my home, but the spring seems stiff enough that it wouldn't drop a mag unless I put a conscious effort into doing it.

But overall it works well, reloads are a breeze! I intend to abuse the sh!t out of it on my next outing, I think it'll hold up.

Had a grand old time shooting my painted Type-97 at a 2 gun match this past weekend, ran like a top (other than some squibs I had from a bad batch of ammo :()! I can confirm that its an interesting gun to shoot a VTAC barricade with...:ar15:

Finished with mine for now!

Mods:
- threaded muzzle
- MOE lower rail
- reshaped grip with milliput (basically added more girth to the back of the grip)
- washer and locktite the top rail screws
- t97.ca buttplate with Magpul thin plate

The thing spits out brass wayyyyy out there so might consider the "0" position gas piston mod for a bit less gas. Overall the Gen 2 shoots well and is pretty accurate!
