7mm rem mag vs 30-06

...i'm curious if anyone has ever taken a raking shot with a 30-06 200 grain barnes bullet? I hunted with a 7RM for 25 years and finally went with a 375 235 grain barnes after i experimented on a whitetail walking away from me at 100 yards and shot clean through him end to end (2700 fps)...after that my 7RM got rebarreled to a 375...i would never have attempted anything like that with the 7RM...i now shoot exclusively heavier bullets...anyone else?

When I was much younger I dropped a bull caribou at a bit over 400 yards using a 30-06 with 180gr Partitions which broke both shoulders. Not a very ###y combination and in that situation with a quick shot being required would I have been better served with a 7mm with a slipperier bullet? Maybe. But the fact remains that likely 98% of game shot in North America is shot at under that range so whether or not a couple inches less wind drift or drop would matter is purely for the amusement of argument.

That said, I have both a 30-06 (three, I guess) and a fast 7 (Mr W's 7 mag) so I suppose that I've properly hedged my bets!

i know it didnt look serious but i thought they released the first nosler partition only in 1948 ....

I don't know about the 200, but I've put a lot of .308 168 TSXs through various things stem to stern; stern to stem and just about every other combination with both the 30-06 and .300. The .375 doesn't have a lock on penetration. I'm not the biggest fan of Barnes though; penetration isn't everything.

I've had both and sold both. Sometimes I consider buying another 7RM, but I can't see myself buying a non-milsurp 30-06.

...that's good to know, thanks! All of my 7RM loads were travelling pretty fast and lacked penetration and for that reason I never even thought of using a barnes...has anyone tried raking shots with a 7RM? .375 just happened to be the calibre I had...got a new tropical Ruger #1 for $425 at the time so that's what I used and have been happy with it ever since...I don't load it up so it's a real pleasure to shoot...

7mm RM isn't suitable for Hog, 30-06 is. Take it from the pro's. Your #1 source. ;)

I guess this means my 6.5x55 is good for nothing

30-06 very effective in closer range, shot many wild boars and elks in Europe, now I hunt a lot in BC, open are long shots and
my Sauer 202 with 7mm is a perfect gun.

7mm RM is an excellent cartridge but not up close. I think it's because it's too fast and the bullet doesn't have time to expand.

Anyone who believes that nonsense, has absolutely no clue about bullet expansion. The higher the impact velocity ,the more rapid the expansion.

Yes, commercial grade 30/06's are used for Bison here in Zama and Rainbow Lake.

They have been taking game animals all across the Americas for years,,, and they also work on Richardson ground squirrels. Ha.
