7mm rem mag vs 30-06

When we raised bison, they got put down at meat time with a 30/06... worked just fine even on the bulls with heads the size of a Smart Car.

My 30/06 is a Magnum when I add 3 extra grains of powder above the Max loads recommendations. LOL.

I alway heard that slow bullets kill better, this might be why us 30/06 dudes rock. Ha

Here's a age old debate with no right answer.
Reason I ask it is I'm bored at work and who does not enjoy a good vs debate.
As a long time satisfied 30-06 user I am thinking about trying out a 7mm rem mag if for no other reason then why not.
I know there are proponents of each out there so let's hear what you have to say, what you prefer and why.

Nothing wrong with a 7mm Rem Mag but realistically you can get almost the same performance from the 280AI, I would go 280AI or to step up in performance to the 28 Nosler, at least with the 28 Nosler if you decide to reach out and touch something it has plenty of energy.

7mm Rem doesn't burn barrels nearly as fast as the bigger 7's, and recoil is tolerable. I think that is part of its popularity.
264 Win mag is another fantastic magnum that lost the popularity contest against it, I may be biased because I like 6.5 cartridges but the 264 Win is probably the better hunting cartridge between the 2 IMHO.

Whats the expected barrel life of a 7mm RM ? 28 Nosler ?

Fer me, there ain't no versus between the '06 & 7RM. I've hunted 'em both & they did the deed. I just like the 7mm more than the '06. The critters I took with either
cartridge would have been dumped easily with a 30-30 at the ranges I took 'em.;)

Well said!

I own two of both, because for me, they are the best "all round" cartridges.

Last week I hunted with one of my trusty '06's, tomorrow morning I'll be taking one of my 7MM Rem mags.

7mm RM isn't suitable for Hog, 30-06 is. Take it from the pro's. Your #1 source. ;)

This chart fullfils my quota for internet stupidity for the day

7mm RM, new age , whipper snapper shooters , metric system advocates, people easily influenced by media and advertising , like sunroofs and 20" wheels.

30/06 , old school , standard imperial type folks, carburetor over fuel injected , won't accept new technology , prefer hand tools over battery powered.

:)

Then there is shooter #3 , "Is that thing even sighted in? GIVE HERE!" , takes said 7RM or 30/06 and drops whatever shooter #1 and #2 missed. ;)

This is like comparing Mars and Snickers , both are a bit different, a slightly different wrapper a bit different on the inside, slightly different flavor but still the same amount of calories.

I currently own a 7mm Rem Mag (Ruger) . An absolue beauty to shoot. Accurate. Love it. Flat shooter. Didnt want a 30-06 because my heart was and is set on the 7mm.

For me the two cartridges are at there best with the 7mm Remington Magnum shooting a 160ish gr bullet at about 3000 fps and the 30-06 slinging a good 200 gr bullet at 2700 fps. These loads work to the strengths of the respective cartridges even if I use them for roughly the same game. It's like having different tools in your toolbox to do different tasks. I dont consider this question an either/or but a both/and, it just depends where and how im hunting or what mood I'm in. There is room in my gun safe for both these great cartridges.
