Picture of the day

The dangly chains are for ammunition such as High explosive squash head (HESH) or High explosive anti tank rounds (HEAT). These rounds need good contact with armour when they explode to cause damage, the chains cause the round to explode away from the armour reducing their effectiveness.

The fences serve the same purpose, and are also effective against RPG.

Civil War veteran Bill Lundy poses with a Fighter Jet - 1955

That looks like Chuck Yeager on the left , maybe I'm wrong .

I was wondering what's the deal with balls on chains on Israeli tanks...Are they are anti-RPG installation? This T-72 seems to have gone nuts with them.

That's one good way to employ welders in Syria.Lots of work doing cage ,chains like that and installing all of it.

It's actually pictures of 3 different Syrian T-72 (look closely at the paint). So, there has to be something to it, because they've gone to the effort of making the same modifications repeatedly.

The dangly chains and cages serve a number of purposes. Pre-detonating RPG and HESH rounds is one. Also, roadside shaped charge Explosively Fired Projectiles (which were a major problem for the US in Iraq and Afghanistan) can be mitigated by the chains and mesh.

Another purpose is to catch hand thrown sticky-bombs, and deflect hand thrown grenades. A grenade won't hard kill a tank, but if it goes off near the turret ring, it can cause the turret to jam. The Israelis are particularly worried about this last, which is why they have the chains under the rear "bustle" of the turret, which acts as a natural trap for hand grenades.

In a close in street fight, grenades and home-brew sticky bombs can be as dangerous to a tank as an RPG, Missile, or high velocity tank round. Knock out a track, disable the turret, and that tank is out of action until it can be retrieved and repaired.

More on Bill Lundy. He was 107 when the pictures and this video was taken, on his birthday.

This film's first scenes are of Bill Lundy, a Civil War veteran, on his 107th birthday. He is seen posing with a birthday cake and a small group of women and men in uniform. Next, wearing an Air Force helmet and flight suit, Lundy poses beside an Air Force jet fighter and its pilot. He is shown holding an old rifle as another man holds a machine gun. The next pose is with two Women in the Air Force (WAFs). The final scene shows Lundy with a bomber plane and its crew.

Has anyone ever seen pictures of Finnish Blenheims with winter camo?I can't find one and refuse to believe they never had any.

What in the hell is that thing??^^^^

An overflight of the 1957 Eglin AFB Airpower Demonstration. B-17G 44-85734 was bought by Pratt Whitney and converted to a test bed for P&W T-34 and T-64 turboprop engines. The aircraft flew “single-engine”, with all four radial engines feathered during test flights before being again sold for scrap. Restoration of 44-85734 began in 1992 with parts from another damaged B-17 (44-85813) and it returned to the air on 8 December 2004 as the LIBERTY BELLE. Original 8mm film by Walter R. Douglas.
