For anyone missing hunting due to injury or sickness...

The conversation about a broken lower leg bone reminded me when I sprained an ankle really badly. Yes, navigating becomes very much a thought exercise to plan your route and activities. I had a cane for that, and found getting around was a nuisance. Can't imagine being no-load-bearing for months. But, hang in there.

Thread hi-jack here!! But what do you guys do for long term ( like forever) pain management.
How do you find out what works for you?
Aleve? iburprohen? legal pot? combination of them all???
I know try but what doses do you use that works??

Read the dosing instructions on the Aleve bottle! the recommended dosing is very low but I found it effective for joint pain

Tibia Plateau Fracture in August, a couple years back. Kinda cramped my style, but found things to do.

Had a spinal Fusion in my lower back in 2008. An improvement, but not a total success story. Pain issues.

Costco has the cheapest Robaxacet clone around. Around a nickel a pill, instead of a buck each.
My Doc is trying to get me off the Coedine (which works, and doesn't wreck my guts) and back on to anything else. Most of ebverything else I have tried in the past had a great deal of worse side effects, though.
She suggested the Pot route too. Haven't yet.

Dealing with my pain requires that I find a balance, more than to find a solution. If I sit still for too long, pain goes up. Work too hard, same. Staying physically active enough, is what seems to work, usually.
If I never see the inside of a gym again, it'll be about right. So I cut and split wood, take care of the stuff I can around the farm, and try not to wreck myself worse.

Welcome to the suck. If you let it wreck ya, it will. So don't. :)

This is true and it wasn't ok'd in Canada till a few years ago. I only use it if needed and not usually more than a week or 2. I put up with my pain, without pills now, unless that isn't an option when I can't anymore.

Not injury, but this will be my second year of no hunting. Spent 29 years hunting on my in-laws 300 acre farm until they sold it.

Things are starting to look up. Just finished buying 25 acres up north and just found out that I will be able to go hunting on a farm where my niece and her husband rent the house.

Falls going to get real busy really fast :)

Hope you heal up fast.

On another note went hunting twice with full blown pneumonia.

I got a prescription for 6% Diclofenac ointment.
It's basically the same as Voltaren but 6x the strength.
I also use those Salonpas patches. Buy them in bulk on Amazon.

Have to use a back support when doing physical activities.

Stay away from anti-inflammatories (e.g. ibuprofen) they eat your stomach and destroy your liver. My ENT Dr. figures they ruin your sinuses as well. His anecdotal not a clinical trial. Had to get mine reamed out. Once the edibles get straightened that is the way to go. Dosage is consistent and you can self dose with confidence. Drops under the tongue. Dosing is covered online on a number of websites.

I have severe allergies to most medications for nerve, joint and muscle pain. Allergic reactions to nsaid pain suppressants that cause hemophilliac responses..... I have been on the medical cannabis since 2002 , referred by my physician and specialist. My specialist was one of BC's top doctors when it comes to managing pain with medication long term.
It is the only thing that keeps me getting up every day. Most people who know me don't realize how physically fuggered I am but pain is 24/7 ..... I don't know what a good sleep is anymore.... can't stand for longer than 1/2 hour , 45 minutes , better if I keep moving.....
In 98 on the job, I was hit in the forhead by an airborn 16pound sledge hammer ...... screwed my neck and shoulder permanently LOL and then a few short months later I got crushed under a 400pound multiport Oxygen tank.......have a herniated disk, 3 compressed discs, nerve damage and hypermobile sacroilliac joints, sciatic nerve pain and leg numbness and they told me I would be in a wheel chair by 50 if I did not lead a sedintary life..... I got that diagnoses 5 years after my injury and I'll be 50 next may..... not in the wheel chair yet and I'm gonna hunt and fish till it kills me.... even if it hurts and I need a buddy along LOL

Ibuprofen is bad..... that crap gave me diverticulosis...which I can manage with diet but ibuprofen is all I can take for pain other than the cannabis oils.
I didn't like to talk about these things before, always afraid of what fellow gunnies would think..... but I've come to realize that nature's medicine works and it's far less harmful than the pharmaceuticals they are synthezising and pumping into us for profit.

anyhow..... sucks to be in pain and have your mobility lessened but keep your spirits up and try and keep moving.

Right after this season ends I am going in for a knee surgery. I'm finally getting my right knee fixed after completely tearing my PCL and LCL 13 years ago! Nine month recovery- just in time for next years season.

Regarding pain meds: Please take them in moderation and don't mix your NSAIDs. I suffer from a form of autoimmune arthritis and aside from taking a biologic drug to keep things under control, I have found that the best way to feel good is to move. Get excercise. Swim, bike, hike, yoga, whatever. This relieves stress and creates blood flow- endorphins help the pain. Cut the stress out of your life. Stress causes muscle tension which increases your pain levels.

Best of health to you all!

Had surgery so no hunting for me either this year. And next year I need ankle reconstruction surgery so no hunting either. FML

Well, I got to go hunting, but broke my ankle in the process. Got some screws & plates installed on Thursday night. Long road ahead.

DA, if you wouldn't mind sharing your story, did you fall, or was your FX ankle due to some other type of accident? In the past few years, I have come to the conclusion that falls are the #1 risk when I am hunting, greater than bear attack, or becoming dinner for the predators I hunt.

To all the posters here who have ailments or injuries, I hope to see you again soon in the field or at the range!

I am sitting here at home after breaking my right tibia at hockey on Tuesday earlier this week. I knew it wasnt going to be good looking at my skate at the time, and surgery ended any hopes of going.

Missing the annual white tail hunt with my son and my buddies family.

Not looking for sympathy but for anyone else that cant make it out for the rest of season, whether this year or in the past for sudden injury or sickness, i feel for ya. This is brutal.

At least my sons out there. I am living through his updates.

Regards
Ronr

Ronr i feel for ya Brother!
I too am not able to get out. First day of whitetail rifle season i tore all the tendonsbin my ankle. So much for bow hunt too. I did manage to hobble around a bit but not what i would call efficient ! Next season i hope! Heal well my friend!

I'm not very a experienced hunter, so I don't like to go alone. Had a trip all planned out, took time off work, then waited all year. Up until the day before when my hunting partner changed his mind and cancelled at the very last minute. So now I'm here, scrambling, trying to salvage what I can. But I doubt I'll get out this year now on such short notice. Sucks, because I missed most of last year because of my new job. I'm actually quite upset over this.

brother i may suggest eating plenty of jello [\B]
and if you can get a recipe for ox tail soup
they both help heal bones much faster
make yourself solid again for next season

Jello eh? I seem to remember something about that. Ox tails are not something i have access to. Beef and pork hocks i do. Is there something about the marrow/jelatin if rendered out in a soup that provides benefit?

Pardon any ignorance on my part and thanks for posting that.

Ronr

Jeez...torn tendons. I am no physician but that may be something thats even more intense for recovery or prognosis. First day yet...awful.

Similar boats we are in. I got out for antlerless mule deer with my son and for that i am thankful.

Sincerely wishing you and others that have posted solutions for all of the ailments and pain free living to enjoy what they love doing.

There are many more with more difficulties than i have right now. I will be looking at hunting opportunities going forward...as how valuable these are and how fortunate a person is.

I don’t want to hijack RonR’s thread too much, but yes, I tripped and fell. Our last night there, my buddy stayed back to do some things around the cabin, & I went out solo to sit for a cpl hours, and take down and bring back the pop up blind. Had the blind on my back, chair on my right side, gun (unloaded & socked) in my left hand. Made it outta the woods, and within my first few steps on the “road” (slippery tire track), I slipped, the gun stock went under my ankle, and my ankle broke over it ( in 3 places) & dislocated. Of course, happened right when my buddy was away from his phone, so for 12 mins. (Until he realized I needed help) I was alone, without a response, dragging myself up the road (getting dark now). It’s funny you mentioned predators. I’ve never considered them a threat around here, but when you become easy prey, well let’s just say I was hoping my buddy would find me before a pack of yotes did!

So that’s my story, sorry OP. Keep the healing suggestions coming everyone! They’re great. This is my first broken bone ever.
