Haven’t honestly had a tone of experience with a big variety of 30 cals but my old abolt 30/06 stainless stalker is my favourite. Just fits me perfect and has always shot well. Has taken down lots of game from black tails to big bears goat elk moose out to 400 yards without any issue. I didn’t do the math but seemed to me most votes in this thread go to the 06. Cool.

If I remained up here in the north, it would be my Win model 70 Extreme Weather in .30-06. (Just cause of the harshness of temps etc) but if I moved back down south to a nice reasonable climate, it would be my Rem model 7 in .308. Nice short light gun.

The “if you could only have 1 firearm” question is unrealistic IMO.

But, if you could only have (or had to own, for those who don’t like .30cal) one .30cal firearm what would it be, and what would be your intended use?. There’s so many types of platforms and applications for the various 30’s that I’m curious to hear people’s preference.

I would have to go with a Marlin 336 chambered in 30-30win. A nice hunting rifle with a good balance of tradition and practicality.

It's not that I don't like 30, but more I guess I have no need for one. I do not hunt, have little interest in shooting beyond 100 or so yards, and I'm cheap, so 5.56mm or 9mm are my go to CF rounds for rifle/carbine. But if I had to, probably an AR10, or maybe a scout rifle.

Since th OP said I could have more than 1 rifle, but only 1 .30 cal, I would make the .30 a magnum. In a light rifle that doesn’t punish. My 300wsm in a x-bolt carbon fibre stainless fluted works well for that. I don’t need it to do everything. I’ll still have .264, .277, .284 calibers to play with

I like the 300 win mag. Norma mag is as good imho, as is H&H. Easy to load up & down. The question is what do you need the rifle to do, ie: blackmail or moose, coyote or elk?
