If you could only have one 30cal

I'm not a hardcore 30cal guy, but make mine a 308 Norma Magnum. Having one built right now on a Montana 1999, Benchmark barrel & McMillan stock

Your going to like that cartridge, some think the norma is a better design than the 300win, whatever, it's a great cartridge. Very accurate, I have a target that I shot with it, a 3 shot group ragged hole, I adjusted the scope a little left and shot another ragged hole beside it. My rifle shot tight with max loads. 165 gr hornady btsp at 3250 fps from a 24" barrel.

Should be a Beauty Rifle ! Is it going to a NEW Modern 300 Norma Mag Beltless Cartridge or the OLD obsolete 308 Norma Mag Belted Cartridge ? Just wondering ? :d RJ

Just like the shooter... eh, Track... ;)

To the contrary, Hoyt. I'm built like the 300 WSM with the velocity of the 30-30 Win.;) Five years ago I killed a nice mule deer buck with the 300 H&H, Ruger #1, and this past autumn (2018) I killed another nice mule deer buck,( 33" wide, 300 Lbs.) this time with another ###y, sleek, grovey cartridge.......the 240 Weatherby Mag. I guess those long sleek, ###y, grovey, cool cartridges work for me!:)

Real Nice Bucks there TRACK ! Im a 240 WBee Fan and i have a GREAT shooting one. What Load Bullet -Powder etc ?? did you Kill that Buck with if i may ask ? Thxs RJ

The Rifle is a complete custom built around the Model 70 CRF. I had a great load using 53gr. of IMR-4831 90gr. Nosler Accubond. I had tremendous velocity of 3,635 fps and 1/2 inch groups, however was receiving signs of pressure. I then reduced the load to 52gr., however the groups opened-up. Reduced it to 51gr. and the rifle consistently shoots 1/4" and less, velocity of 3,505.
Final Load
51.0 gr. IMR-4831
90 gr. Nosler Accubond
.005 jump
Fed. 210M
27" Jury Custom Barrel - Stainless Steel

I have always been a 7mm fan, but my Finnlight 300win mag has taken more BC game than a full deck of cards

Odd how druthers vary. A lot of guys will opt for lighter, fast bullets, like the 7mm or 6.5. Personally, I like a huge chunk of pure lead moving at a slower pace, like the 45-70. If I were hunting at long range, my go-to would be something like a 338 or 375.

Ha Ha ! Well Me and 7mag have BIG bores too 338 Rum 375 H&H 404 Jefferey 416 Taylor 45-70 Gov 450 Marlin So we are covered ! :d RJ

I guess all 3 of my 30 cal's will be chambered in 308 Winchester.

All close range stuff for hunting,,, and the option to shoot the 4, 6, 8, and 900 meter F Class stuff,,, I must remember to test the waters in PRS and iron silhouette this year. Ha.

Of course this will take place after the long winter predator control season,,, lots of furry critters on the move this year,,, that and some fun testing loads for the up coming season.

Find the cartridge that puts a Grin on the face and get at it.

Can't go wrong with any caliber out there,,, my main practic rig is a 22 rimfire,,, I call it the planning of battling the winds and gravity. LOL

Since I prefer smaller calibers for hunting deer and varmints, and bigger calibers for elk and moose and bears and African game, I'd dedicate my one and only .30 cal rifle to target shooting. My new Sako 85 varmint HB in .308 win. would do the trick.
