I had noted that as well. Wonder if that sniper went on to survive the war.

Looks like he is resting the front stock on plywood that was boarding up the broken window glass.
We would think of his way of holding the rifle, severely limited, that British thing.

It's quite possible. Here is the wiki about it and the various accounts. Depend on which account one chooses to believe I could see why people would feel a bit of outrage towards the statue. Although I personally believe it is important not to judge historical actions by current acceptable standards of behaviour but rather by the standards of the time I also understand why some would be upset at the glorification of said event depending on which account they believe to have happened.
TL;DR Buddy may have forced himself on her, some people think that's not cool.
There's a huge statue of this at the Memorial Museum in Caen, France. Most of the museum is focused on the war in Normandy, so I found it a bit incongruous that this statue was there. There's another huge statue rendition of this beside the USS Midway museum in San Diego. It looks more appropriate there.
