243 Improved, the 6mm Creedmoor

I need to catch my breath!!! As I was reading, I was thinking ... "He's gonna say he don't like it." Crap, what's not to like?
Nice looking set up. Enjoy.

Have about 65 rounds through it now, shoots pretty good and the best is yet to come.

100 yards with the Barnes 112gr Match Burner

Short/light bullets no problem in the 7.7 twist, it's sub moa 5 shot groups with 90gr Sierra Tipped Gamekings, 87gr Vmax and 87gr Hornady BTHP

Give the 110 SMKs a try. They and the 115 DTACs have the best BCs going for 6mm. Not sure on how they perform on game though? Somewhere around 42.3gr of H4350 or 44.7gr of H4831sc should get you tight groups and about 3000FPS (3050fps in my 26" barrels).

Nice shooting!
I have found my 6mm's to be more picky with long bullets compared to the .224 and .264 neighbours. Looks like those Barnes are doing great, Good job!

I run the 115 D tac in a 6XC and just under 3000fps with H4350, sub 1/2 MOA in a 26" Benchmark barrel, on a Tikka action. If I had been more aware of the 6 CM when I built it I probably would have gone that way. Nice rifle, I enjoy reading about your builds.

I have a hundred pieces of 1x fired Alpha brass. Going to try some loads with the Barnes 112gr Match Burner HPBT bullets for target shooting

What does the 6CM have over a 243, bbl configurations aside?

Nice rifle, BTW.

Faster twist factory barrel, can shoot the longer heavier high BC Vld's that a factory 243 would not be able to.
Out of all the Creedmoor offerings, this one actually makes the most sense and offers some legitimate benefits.

..... as mentioned, bbl configurations aside. :)

Put a fast twist barrel on a 243 win or 6mm Rem and there likley isn't much difference.

Tod, what is your oal with the Barnes?

Well, that's the most important part. Same reason the 6mm Rem flopped and the 243 Win flourished. They both shot 6mm pills at very close velocities, one could handle heavier bullets, and it made it far more versatile.

I'm a bit of a skeptic on the twist rate story with the 243 Winchester and the 244 Remington, the 280 Remington also flopped 2 years after the 244. Winchester outsold Remington something like 4:1 across the board.

At the time, Winchester sold significantly more rifles in all calibers and had more prestige than Remington.

The only thing that gives the story some credence is that Remington did relaunch it with the faster twist to match the 243 Win, and then it saw some success.
The 280 flopped because the 270 was already entrenched with hunters for 30 years prior.
They did hit it out of the park with the 7mm Rem at least.

Reminton generally has a poor track record with new cartridges, and to this day they have very rarely been able to scoop Winchester.

The twist rate arguement assumes the average rifle buyer is more sophisticated than he actually is. To this day lots of people buy 80 grain 243 ammo for deer because its cheap, or because it is what the store has.

Winchester sold more rifles and had greater market penetration.

Remington hasn't been ahead of the curve since they brought out the Rolling Block.

Ballistics/potential is the same. The 6cm has 5% less capacity than the 243, so that means about 1.3% less velocity (40 fps +/-) when loaded apples to apples. Biggest advantage would be good long range factory ammo available, the 103gr Precision Hunter load and 108gr ELD Match both shoot really well in the rifle. I have a couple boxes of Federal Gold Medal 105gr Berger Hybrids which I don't think will disappoint. Even though I reload, I like the option of good ammo available if needed. No real advantage over the 243 in brass offerings, since you can even get Peterson small rifle primer 243 these days. Like the 6.5cm/260 Rem. the Creedmoor is a better fit within the constraints of a 2.8" mag box, when loaded with the longest heaviest bullets on the market

Shucks mate id like a nice 6 Creedmoor or 243 built along with a 6.5 mm or 7mm..... tiborasaurusRex on YouTube seems to like the 243 with I think it was 108 gr amax
