I got scammed so I am posting this as a reminder/warning to other nutz to be careful when buying a used LEUPOLD scope. I wish I would have done my homework first, but didn't and now learned an expensive lesson.
The scope came on a used rifle that I purchased from a fairly new gun store (not sure if I am allowed to post the name here so I won't). Regardless, they are washing their hands of the issue and offering no compensation.
Anyways, the scope is a fake LEUPOLD VX3i 3.5 x 10 x 40 matte and is serial # 366708AC. I am giving the serial number, because after seeing the fake side by side with my genuine VX3, and noticing a few subtle differences, I phoned 1-800-LEUPOLD and talked to their technical services department where they told me that there are SEVERAL of these fakes in circulation with that exact serial number.......(Leupolds service was top notch by the way).
The rep told me that my first warning should have been that the scope has a mildot reticle, and Leupold has never put that reticle in that model of scope.
Anyways, I am now stuck with a counterfeit scope as I will not put anyone else thru this crappy feeling of being scammed. It will live on a .22 and make me mad every time I think of how much it cost me! BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!!
(on a side note, I am really curious who is building these counterfeits as they are done quite well, and the exterior quality looks better than many base model name brand scopes I have seen)

Chinese made counterfeit Leupold scopes are well known. So are fake Zeiss.

Crappy situation. Can you return the entire rifle since you’re not satisfied with the purchase? Or does the store have a No Return policy on used items?

I’m sure the store priced the rifle package based on a genuine Leupold. Either way, it means you didn’t get any kind of deal.

When I phoned the store to tell them, they said "awww sorry" and that's all they said. I'm not even that upset with the store really, the scope looks so real that possibly they didn't even know? I just want to warn others to be cautious if looking at used Leupolds.
(The scope came on a beautiful sako A3 mannlicher and yes, I presume about $500 of the price was the scope...... as long as the rifle isn't a counterfeit I guess that's life!!!)

It sucks to get a fake one for a good price, I had one from on EE, but it seems good, I have not tried it on my semi automatic rifles but I'm thinking about trying it on my bolt action, might work out, it's a fake Leopold mark 4, red and green illumination

I wouldn’t accept this “awww sorry” from the store. I would make it clear to them that they sold you a counterfeit item even though it was probably not known to them. Now it is known to them and it is up to them to come good for their part in the transaction. Weather it was a “no return on a used gun” policy or not, the gun was not as described and you should give them the option to make it right, cancel a credit card purchase or threaten to take them to small claims court.

This is their problem, not yours.

would be nice to see which store thinks it is fine to misrepresent, and sell counterfeit as they don't want to make good and get the police involved.

Well that is not how it works. Selling counterfeit products is not legal and I would give them the option to refund your money pronto and face less of your wrath vs. not refunding it pronto and facing a bit more of your wrath.

Your first steps are your CC company where you report them for fraud, I would also contact Leupold and tell them who is selling fake scopes. You can also contact the police who will probably not give a crap.

Your CC company will likely get your money back, if not tell vendor you will get it back via small claims

If you bought it with a credit card you should contact them as you may be covered under purchase protection.

That would have been the first step and a second call to the Local BBB...
It is easy for the store to wash their hands, but repeat business or the lack there of will surely cost more than buying the scope back.

They knew. There is only one distributor for Leupold in Canada. In fact they may want to know about a retailer selling counterfeit product. I would contact Korth in the great town of Okotoks, AB and let them know.
Oh, and name the retailer that's BS.

Why would you accept that response from the store?

I agree with all of the above.
The stores response is totally unacceptable.
They are either in on the scam or so incompetent they don't know what they are actually selling. If they sold you a used firearm and a used Leupold scope that turns out to, in fact, not be a real Leupold scope they must make it right and take it back and refund your money.
Saddling a customer with counterfeit product and walking away from your responsibility to be a honest retailer is appalling. I would make it clear to the store that they either do the right thing and take the scope back and refund your money or you put the company name on here so we all know not to do business with them. I certainly would never trust a company that would pull that type of stunt.

on the other side of the coin, was the value of the rifle equal to the used value of scope/rifle combination?
did the store mount the scope or the original owner - go shot the rifle and than decide.
But if the store knowing sold the counterfeit than you have some grounds for recourse - I would be approaching them with the option to replace the scope (either equal value of the package or a real one discounted to match the value of the original package).

It's been a pretty known issue for years.... if the shop was ignorant or just too lazy, then compensating you might help them learn from their mistake.

Yes especially if the store He got the counterfeit scope happens to be a leupold retailer .

I want to thank you all for kicking my arse and making me feel stupid for not putting it back on the store. I took all your advice, and phoned the store again to discuss this with them. I explained that I posted a thread on here trying to warn others about counterfeit scopes out there, and didn't mention their store name because this is not what this thread was about.
I told them of the upset responses and the opinions shared and it seems they might now want to make some sort of amendment.
At least this time they took down my email and my phone number, and said they will contact me Monday. Hopefully they make it right then. If not I will then share the name of the store on here to protect my fellow nutz from this kind of dealing, if that is acceptable to the moderators. (I don't know if that kind of thing is no no or not.)
