COUNTERFEIT leupold scopes

I wouldn’t accept this “awww sorry” from the store. I would make it clear to them that they sold you a counterfeit item even though it was probably not known to them. Now it is known to them and it is up to them to come good for their part in the transaction. Weather it was a “no return on a used gun” policy or not, the gun was not as described and you should give them the option to make it right, cancel a credit card purchase or threaten to take them to small claims court.

This is their problem, not yours.

i would have to agree. they should not be selling counterfeit products reguardless if they knew or not...............

back in the wholesale sports days, I noticed the scoped used guns had very good prices. one inline had a vx3 scope on it. the sales guy told me we don't add anything to the price if there is a scope on a used gun.... in case the scope has issues. i dont know how common that practice is.... just sayin

Very.

In the case of Cabela's it's specifically for this reason.

We have encountered a couple of brand new Leupold clones that were sold as new Leupold optics at the Toronto Sportsman's show this year. We have been there to display for the last two years, but opted to not attend this year. Wish we had now - would like to know where these knockoff optics were sold. FYUI - these were sold at proper Leupold retail; not discounted to make it known they were fakes.

What are some easy ways to differentiate fake from real?

A few things to look for:
The Gold Ring is not a proper gold colour
Laser marks on the gold ring are not centered
Laser marks are not as crisp
Check under the turret caps - Leupold does not use any gold colouring on new optics under the caps
Tactical reticles in a hunting optic
Packaging looks off
More than one optic for sale has the same serial number

We have encountered hard-to-identify VX-3i 3.5-10x40 and LCO's recently that are very well done.

When in doubt, call us or Leupold.

Thanks for pitching in with some deets.

Recently mounted one of these knockoffs for a 'customer'who had me re-stock a rifle for him. He bought it off Wish (Chinese knockoff app- some good deals, just realize you're getting cheap knockoffs). Seemed OK at 4x, cranked it to 24x and you could NOT focus it. Not possible. No gold ring on objective, clicks on turrets were mushy. I told him from the start it was a dud- he put on a real one and thinks he's getting this one replaced under 'warranty'... money not brains.

Just for fun, I searched for Leupold Vari-X 1. Here's one of the first scopes that came up: www.ebay.com/itm/1-5-5X20mm-Riflescope-Matte-MilDot-Rifle-Scope-Duplex-Reticle-W-Cap-For-Hunting/202397245261?_trkparms=aid%3D555018%26algo%3DPL.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D58646%26meid%3D85193e962b7846c6b2ab1e9ffed071b8%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D12%26mehot%3Dlo%26sd%3D254267476298%26itm%3D202397245261&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

At least it doesn't say Leupold.

However, this one shows Leupold laser-engraved on the gold ring: www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Riflescope-1-5-5X20mm-Matte-MilDot-Rifle-Scope-Duplex-Reticle-Scope/253045715204?_trkparms=aid%3D555018%26algo%3DPL.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D58646%26meid%3D85193e962b7846c6b2ab1e9ffed071b8%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D254267476298%26itm%3D253045715204&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

Beware, my friends.

would be nice to see which store thinks it is fine to misrepresent, and sell counterfeit as they don't want to make good and get the police involved.

How do you KNOW ? that they Knew it was a counterfeit ? OP even admitted they might not have known ! BUT they should HELP out the fellow for sure with a scope or $$ refund for sure ! jmo RJ

I read in another thread one way to verify a fake is the power adjustment goes clockwise to increase power on a real Leupold but counterclockwise on a fake.

Can you verify this info?

I bought one of these scopes knowingly about twenty years ago online from a guy that was in Toronto that disappeared a few years after and only paid $100 bucks new. Didn't try it for about five years and wouldn’t hold zero. Am going to disassemble it sometime I’m bored just to study scope internals but definitely don’t feel burnt as I knew at the time you don’t get a new Leupold for a hundred bucks. Unless the used rifle was priced in part on thinking the scope was authentic I wouldn’t get too excited but could see the average gun store employee missing the signs it’s fake. The Fake Leopold warning has been in this optics section at the top for a long time. Don’t feel too bad as it’s probably not the biggest letdown you will experience with firearms in you lifetime. Remember Jesus loves you.—- Dieseldog!

We have seen both. However, Leupold scopes run clockwise from low to high magnification.

Hey OP are you going to out the greasy whores that sold you the scope or not? Think of it as good public service karma:p:)

Comments like this make us wish CGN had a like button. LOL

Unknowingly Bought a fake VX1 off ebay last year. Got suspicious and called Leupold to verify. They confirmed the serial number was legit but the give away was the power ring markings. I sent them pics and they said it was the best counterfit they had seen to date. I ended up putting it on an old 22 rimfire.
