IPSC Canada Nationals - Quebec

Do you all know that at all USPSA AREA Matches, Championship Matches and the US NATIONAL Championships as well as every other level 3 and 4 match around the world, the competitors patch and reset on the stages with there squad as the shoot? The RO's and CRO's generally help with steel and paint but not always.

The Canadian Nationals is the only international match I have ever shot that I have to work a full day as well as compete.

Not sure what everyone else's experiences are currently.

I too would rather work a full day than patch and reset during my shooting. Last thing I want to be doing is that when I'm there to shoot. For smaller matches no problem, but for major matches, no thanks. I would also pay extra to not have to work at all. Bring in cadets or scouts or something and have them patch and reset. Pay CROs and ROs to be there and shoot the prematch. I would also actually RO/CRO a prematch for the officials if there was a day off before shooting started. And speaking of day off, during the shooting portion, if there was no work requirement, we could do away with the whole day off thing. Give us 3 half days of shooting, 24 or more stages total. That would rock.
I don't know what it is with Canada and our matches, but we could learn a lot from Europe and how they run major matches there. Look at Extreme Euro, Infinity and of course Baltic Storm which is 40 stages shot over two days in 5hr sessions. Yes, 20 stages in 5-5.5hrs. You want to be tested on your mental game, go shoot that.

Just wondering what range in Canada could handle 24+ stages on their own sperate bays.... By memory of the last three nationals matches we didn't have anywhere near the space required and that was with still having multiple stages on the same bay. if we want to keep adding competitors every year than we either need more stages being shot at the same time(refer to first question) or add more days. As for the not having a work day I'm all for it but that means having all CROs and ROs being paid for their time (I'm unsure what the CROs were paid or given this year) which adds more cost.

Not correct, most of the major level III and IV and V around the world you only shoot, you don't work, at all. Other than CRO and ROs, who volunteer to do so, in exchange for free match fee, some free food and usually shared accomodations. Most of the major matches, outside of the US and Canada, have paid helpers to do the steel setting/painting and patching. They also charge more for matches and it's worth it. I think I've shot one match in Europe that was a level III and I had to patch. Even some of the level II you don't have to work as they have enough people willing to help out.

You don't need 24 bays to run a 24 stage match, as you can put at least 2 or 3 of the short stages on a single bay, or a short and a medium. you can also combine stages on bays, which we've seen done before. So today bay 1 is stage 1, but two days from now it becomes stage 12 or something. I've shot 20 stage matches on 4 bays over 2 days. Hell Frank and the boys pull of a Level III match inside CRAFM every year and it's outstanding. Their stages at Nationals this year were excellent, I just wish there had been more. As you say if we want to grow the number of shooters at the Nats we are going to need more stages, or we split nationals up and have two of them, one iron sights, the other optics or something. Norway does that, and it works.

...on the other end, somebody clocked in at 114. Oops!

I had a lady clock in at something like that when I worked the chrono stage a couple years ago when Nationals was held in Calgary. Apparently the husband (shooting Nationals with her) used the wrong weight bullets by mistake ...

Again if I remember correctly there where 2 competitors that did not make the minor power factor floor. But I am sure if I am mistaken euxx will correct me.

Since you've asked there were 3 subminor, including the only Revolver competitor.

But the most impressive is the 193pf of some Open MINOR shooter.

I worked as a CRO last year and had to shoot the prematch in one day, 18 stages. I hope to never have to do that again. In 2021 the nationals prematch will definitely be two days like we did in Calgary.

I think that is a good idea. when they try and force a ton of stages into a prematch it becomes a testing ground instead of an actual match. It's also nice if there is a rest day between the prematch and the main match, say for registration. but not sure if people are willing to commit that kind of time here in Canada.

Ideally I'd like prematch Mon-Tue. Main match wed, thur, fri, shoot off and banquet Saturday. Not sure though, seems ambitious. Staying a whole extra day just for the banquet never made sense to me. Id rather have Sunday as a rain day or travel day.
