Small, light, black bear and deer carbine?

I have two tricked out Mohawk 600's in .308. One with a Trijicon RMR red-dot, the other sometimes iron sight, sometimes a Leupold vx3i 1.5-5.

Love these little rifles for bush carry. Doesn't get much better imo.

Hey Bro! don't blame ya! They are jewels for small stature(read ole tymers) What can I say? Even young guys who ARE NOT on the weights! Or I saved the best for last(all the pretty ladies) WooHoo!

As far as small light bear carbines go, I have a pair of Ruger .358 carbines that are ideal... "IF" you don't mind a hinged floorplate rather than a removable magazine. The Frontier is only 36 1/4" long with a full sized stock, the RS carbine is 38 1/4" long... neither is super light, but light"ish" and due to their compact proportions they feel lighter and maneuver very well.

Another vote for Ruger American Ranch in 450 BM. Accurate, around 6 pounds and shorter than a yardstick (I lopped off stock by 5/8"). Have yet to remove the goofy howitzer brake. Red dot speeds things up.

my understanding is the OP wants something nimble, short(ish) range that can be employed quickly
needing hear protection might not fit the bill

I always wear hearing protection when I'm carrying a firearm especially my 14" barreled T/C Contender carbines = Magnum Ear molded electronic hearing protection https://superiorsoundtechnology.com/Magnum.html

I wear electronic hearing protection muffs in colder weather.

"Bear defence" to me screams a short barrel 45-70. But then again, an older "winchester 94 trapper" with the 16" barrel chambered in 3030 would also be just fine. Or if you really want something cool, try finding a Mohawk 600 or 660 chambered in .350 rem mag, that would be a fun hammer!

Having trouble finding a good rifle for what I want it for.

Basically looking for something that is
1: compact as possible and light
2: rugged for bouncing around on an Atv
3: reasonable to use for bear protection while checking cams/scouting new areas
4: possibly deer if I’m in the right place at the wrong time.

i have a Remington 700 for my usual deer rifle but I would like something compact and that has open sights or peeps.

i was thinking a kel tec sub 2000 in 40 cal would fit the bill. Or an aero asr 10mm. then the old model 94 came to mind. What do you guys use? Or any ideas?

Why not just go with the traditional Canadian solution: A cheap cut down Lee-Enfield .303.

Remington model 7 or 600 great handy guns and come in a wide range of cartridges. My 600 is under a meter long and under 6 LB can mount a William peep sight or I can use the original iron sights or scope.

I just grabbed a Sako Black bear in .308. This may be the best handling rifle I have ever shouldered. This rifle iron sight are immediately clear and in target. I have a QR Leupold mount with 2.5-10x32. The irons are incredible and the optic is great and detachable. It will be my do-all out to 500 rifle. My next choice is a handy 94 in 30-30 for a quick handling and reliable rifle.

Tikka Battue in .308.

I have three hunting rifles. A CZ 550 .270 LUX, a CZ 550 Safari .375H&H, and a Tikka T3X Battue .308, couldn't agree more its a pretty slick rifle for the tighter area trips. I've seen some places that can rebore your .308 to a .358win which would pretty sweet rifle for close up encounters while still-hunting.
