7mm-08 VS 308

OP, better option may be find wife a youth model in 308 and have her hold in in the gunstore compared to std rifles.

Wife hunts with a youth model 7-08 not because of recoil, because we feel it's a good round and was available in youth model.
She tried 30-30, 375win, 270, 30-06 before we figured out calibre/recoil had nothing to do with it.

Rifle balance did. Std rifles just simply have too much "end" barrel weight and she had trouble holding the rifle steady for any length of time.

Put a shorter, weight closer to shoulder youth model in her hands and she hasn't looked back.

The Ruger American Compact is a youth model, thx.

I bought my boy a Browning X bolt Micro Midas in 7-08 and it is a great rifle. The micro's are lite and you can add in 1, 2 or all 3 of the butt extensions if needed. I really like the rifle and used it myself for deer last year with Hornady whitetail 139gr Interlock ammo.

Ok thanks!, the 140 gr seems to be a popular choice.

Go much heavier than that and the bullets start to get pretty long and take up powder space if they fit the magazine. I'm going to start with 150gr scirrocco 2s when I finally get a 7mm08 of my own, and maybe 120gr ttsx...

As mentioned, the 7mm08 is Ballistically superior due to better BC's for similar weight bullets. Better sectional density too, which generally means better penetration.

Where did u buy it from?

She will never know the difference in the performance she gets with the 7mm-08 if she has never used a 308, and under most circumstances, neither will the deer, bears or moose. She puts the bullet in the vitals and you'll be helping her take her game home!

I just picked up a savage axis in 7-08 for my kid. I have a rem 700 sps in 308. First thing I noticed was Cabela’s didnt have as many ammo choices in 7-08. The Hornady whitetail 140 gr in his rifle recoil way more than my rifle with 150gr federal premiums. So I’d say the rifle you choose will affect felt recoil far more than which cartridge you choose, and there’s more choices in 308 for a few bucks a box less. The axis was used and a good deal, shoulders nice, smooth bolt, but the mag is cheesy/mediocre.

I looked at the axis and went with the Browning Micro Midas instead and I'm glad I did, even thought it cost more. The recoil pad is really nice and with the butt spacers that come with you can increase the lop 3/4", there are 3 spacers and each one is a 1/4". The Micro has a 20'' barrel.

No doubt the Micro Midas is a quality rifle. I’m going to get something more permanent, I have 2 other kids so the axis will be handy over the next few years. I’d prefer to start them with detachable mags, and less important a bolt that locks down with the safety on.

7mm-08 is perfectly suitable for moose, elk, large bear. Use a quality bullet and place it in the vitals. Recoil is less than a 308, which is a good thing

I'd absolutely go with a 7mm-08 if I didn't have a sweetheart of a little 7x57. I love the 30 caliber but the 308 has never done it for me as a hunting rifle. No idea why. I would have guessed that it was because it was too pedestrian but I love the 30-06 so that can't be it.

Rifle Looneyism, I guess.

Would the 18 inch barrel of the Ruger American Compact have a significant negative impact on either cartridge performance?
