Does anyone hunt deer under 600 yards anymore?

"I like it up close and personal when I'm hunting it gives the critters more of a chance"

^^bullseye^^
Nothing gets your blood pumping getting them in close is the only way I have hunted deer - using a crossbow. I enjoy sitting in a stand and taking in the surroundings if a deer comes by and I have a chance to fill my tag I shoot. A few times they were just 'not' close enough for a shot so I just watched them go by.

Everyone.

Any hunter saying they shoot their game beyond 600 yards is either lying, or completely unethical. Even in a perfect scenario, with a sub moa rifle.

And in the extremely unlikely case, they aren't lying. They aren't good hunters, is there a reason they are incapable of getting closer to game? Are they really that stinky and loud?

And, now the judge and jury arrive telling you how to hunt. ;)

The same can't be said of me on this topic; but Kelly...you come across as being on the fence on this topic?
Kinda like a Magpie...?
Me, I'm stuffing a tube on a Win 94 with 38-55 handloads. If the game seems a tad far...tomorrow maybe the 9.3 x 57 or the 30-40 will get taken out.
Best of Luck all.
Stay safe

Given that most guys think 5 inches is 9 inches, I wonder what they think 600 yards is? Probably around 200 meters...

My deer have been taken at 50 yards or less, except one at 125 yards. My deer country does not have long sight lines.

Moose have been taken at 5 yards to 100 yards. Same thing, usually can't see very far, awyway.

The one exception is when my buddy and I stepped into a clear cut and saw a moose transiting the cut 425 yards away. (later measured the distance)

I had no idea of the actual distance, except I knew it was a long way off. Looked like a dog with antlers..

We both fired 4 shots. I was using a 358 with a scope. He had a M88 in 308 with irons.

My shots probably hit the ground 100 yards in front of the moose.

Buddy got 2 lung shots.

The 180 gr soft point had ZERO expansion. The bullet could have be re-loaded.

This ^ I find many hunters exaggerate the distances of shots, rangefinders have taken that equation out a bit, in the old days 70 yard shots were the 200 yard shots on the run. I have personally shot bear and deer at just under 200 yards (190 yards, 180 yards), range finder measured. I found these shots not to be too bad if you have a rifle sighted in at 100 yards not much drop at 200 an inch or 2 so the shots are doable. Once you get out to 300 with a 100 yard zero you are going to experience some significant drop and spreading of your shot. If you haven't practiced it's an easy miss or you will end up with a wounding shot. I personally keep shots to 200 yards and under on big game. If I can get more time to practice and my rifle is zeroed properly maybe that limit would bump up to 300. I would expect things to get worse out to 350 and 400 and beyond where you need serious practice and kit to account for variables at those distances. Also unless you are shooting from one mountain side to the other you should be able to get closer IMO.

Magpie's watch and observe and are rarely tricked. ;)

I won't post what I can or cannot do for shooting ability on game , I'm not going to let the CGN elite flog and crucify me.

Some can't hit sh it at 75 yards with a rest , some can consistently hit off had at 200 , it's all relative to ability and confidence.

When I go to the range I see quite a few guys and gals sighting in their hunting rifles (mostly bolt action scoped rifles)....damn, lots of them are having trouble getting 6 inch groups off a bench at 100.

and on the other end of the spectrum, I see guys getting pissed when a flyer opens up their group to 3/4's of an inch at 100.

Conclusion, some can....some can't! :)

Good observation, and ;) , well put :) .

Nope, just stating CGN facts, truth is truth.

Nope, just being butthurt.

At no point do I "tell us how to hunt". I merely state I think you 600+ yard hunters are lying.

Telling you HOW to hunt would be me saying things like:

-no tree stands
-no bait piles
-no magnum cartridges
-no headshots
-no shots taken over 600 yards!

Didnt say anything like that there Chris Kyle... just said people claiming to take their game at ranges past 600 yards are full of it. And judging by your reaction to that, I assume that struck a nerve. You can always lie to us... but never yourself bud. Have a great day

Reading the other posts on this board - I have to Ask - Does anyone hunt deer under 600 yards anymore?

Archival digging seems to be a hunting forum thing more than any other. 2009!

Me, shots have been from 2' to 300 yards. Spots I hunt, shots further than that are hard to come by. I used to sight in at 400 when I hunted in flatter territory, but that would be about as far as I'd care to shoot.

Your reading comprehension is typical of a CGN'r with grade 3 , actually 3rd graders are better , when did I state I was a "600 yard hunter"?

I typically hunt with bow for deer, if not it's a lever action in the bush ,sorry to disappoint you.

And your response and sh it attitude is why people are no longer posting much about hunting exploits, nice when someone proves your point for you. :)

Assuming is a hell of a thing isn't it?

As for the Chris Kyle statement, he is the biggest bull sh itter out there , he'd fit right in on this thread.

I would tear you down, but there is little point. Your posts speak for themselves.

Thank you for stopping by :)

He's a Spoon and Crockpot; but with some careful walking and patience...he's what's for dinner tomorrow.

The very same 38-55 that I mentioned a page ago. About 75-80 paces; one shot, he ran about 80 paces and expired.
Oversize PL bullets from the Lee mold; 255 gr at 0.379 dia over 10 grain's of Unique. Seems to duplicate the curve that the factory sights like.
Oh, and I do all my target shooting offhand. Ain't no benches on the creek...once you know it'll hit where you point it, stand up and shoot it like you'll be required to.
Best of luck, stay safe my fellow members.

Go ahead big fella!

*yawn* is this what ya do with your day? Find someone to provoke into an internet fight all day?

If you need a couple points, here's just two. Your tactic was to try an accuse me of being a poor reader... in maybe the most childish way possible. Trying to relate my prowess at deciphering the written word to that of a 3rd grader... classic!

But the best has to be the beginning and the end. You come out of the wood work to attack my notion that these claims of 600+ yard kills are bs and that I think shooting that far is unethical. Essentially coming to the rescue of said 600+ yard sniper hunters, THEN! claim that Chris Kyle is a liar (a veteran who was shot dead while trying to help PTSD sufferers after his tours, mind you). Truly interesting to witness you pretzel yourself around with very little input from me.

I have a job, and many things to accomplish today, so will leave you to your internet games.

Sorry to everyone else for tainting this thread with this pantomime bs.

Ps. Nice deer taken with that lever! Taking the 1894 out this Saturday!

You're the one who accused me of being a 600 yard hunter, I didn't claim I was. :)

My - P.S. - Go read Mr.Kyles book.
