... So I opened 25 or so. Replaced his powder with CFE Pistol 5.4 grains.
Again. High and low power shots and some squibs. Shooting bench covered in half burnt powder.F&%K IT !!
I open 80 rds. dumpt the powders, pull the primers, run the casings through the ultrasound 6 times on hot. reload them. Low power and 50% squibs.
And half burnt powder all over the bench !!!
First thing I noticed was the .38 projectiles were only pushed into the depth for .357mag. I then had to press all 400 .38 special rds to the correct over all length
Something just isn't adding up, you fired his loads then cleaned the cases, reloaded them and you still have some squibs, those cases should have no contamination after you cleaned them. I'd trow them in some gasoline for a few minutes then dry and clean again preferable with a vibratory polisher.
Definitely unload all the rest of the remaining rounds, detonate the primers, use the powder for fertilizer and recycle the bullets.
After cleaning. They were all reloaded with NEW components.Something doesn't sound right, please provide more information on YOUR reloads:
Calibre = .38 Special?
OAL = ?
Charge = CFE Pistol 5.4gr
Bullet construction and weight = ?
Primer manufacturer and type = ?
Also, I've never owned a Chiappa, so take this with a grain of salt, but could it be a gun problem? Have you tried the ammo in another revolver?
Pull bullets. Dump powder, de-prime Tumble clean
carry on. Should work.
Speed loading
This doesn't make sense either, How would a "by itself" rimmed cartridge headspace without the moon clip if it has enough room for the additional moon clip between recoil plate & cylinder.
Buying reloaded ammo from some guy you dont know was an error in judgement.
Being stupid usually comes with a cost and if we're lucky it's
just $.
I didn't see the part where OP bought from a licensed commercial reloader. I thought he was buying from Joe he met on the interne and I apologise to OP - it's only stupid if he goes back for more.I can't say I know any of the key people at Wolf, Centaure, Western Metal, et cetera. Or the folks at Winchester, Federal or Remington, for that matter. I still buy their ammo, and I don't think it's fair to call me stupid for doing so. You kind of have to assume that being part of a regulated industry counts for something.

Reloader tellsthe cases are new, and the contamination comes from a new polish he's just trying out - nobody polishes new brass. The only question is whether reloader is lying or incompetent. Seems obvious that story is BS unless there is more to it.
Commercial reloader" isn't necessarily interchangeable with "competent reloader".
OP should ask what polish was used to make this powder go screwy like that. Answer would be interesting.
