Desert Tech Owners

Well, after years of buying ammo, dies and components for rifles that I didn't even own...yet...I took the next logical/illogical step and bought a barrel for a rifle I don't own...yet. A Desert Tech 22-inch .308 barrel/bolt/mag sit staring reproachfully at me as I type this; if I squint I can almost hear them saying "So...where's the chassis, a-hole?"

Still haven't handled an actual complete rifle yet, but I love bullpups, and I love bolt guns, so what can possibly go wrong?

Absolutely nothing.... but if decide to change direction pm me and I may buy your conversion

Will do...but I won't change directions until I at least travel in this direction for a bit. :) Still need to assemble the complete rifle and shoot it for awhile to decide how I feel about it. I won't necessarily keep it forever, but I will give it a chance. And I definitely won't be posting one of those classic EE threads: "Bought this a couple of hours ago, but I'm changing directions so need to sell it because I see something else shiny!" :)

Out of curiosity, what height of scope mounts/rings are most users finding to be optimal with these guns? Do they work best with AR-style co-witness mounts, or something a bit lower? I know Desert Tech markets their own mount, but a good return-to-zero QD mount is what I would want long-term and I don't think theirs is?

I have a Desert Tech and I also absolutely love it. It is as accurate as any of my other high end rifles, but is Unique in form and feel and you need to use one, if you can, to be sure you like it.
My observations between it and my AI rifle and custom bolt guns are: trigger in my SRS is definitely not up to Triggertech Diamond or BixnAndy Comp triggers, or even the aftermarket trigger in my Accuracy International, but it is very usable and can be adjusted to work nicely as a target rifle.
The SRS also has the best barrel swap system of any rifle on the market, and can go from 6BR to shooting 338 Lapua in 2 mins, at the range. Plus very repeatable zeros with barrel swaps. Also nice to have one rifle/scope, and just buy barrels/bolts, and use any caliber you’d like all on the same gun.
Mine has seen well over 20000 rounds, and 8-10 different barrels, and is still going strong.
They are a very accurate system, and no less accurate then my AI or Insite built custom rigs. The new one is supposed to be even more accurate, but I think that’s a little bit of marketing hype, and the barrel is what truly makes or breaks the accuracy potential.
My SRS is a leftie, so I will have to wait another year or more before we see new leftie versions, but I see no reason to upgrade. If you can find a good deal or a good used one on the EE, grab it and save some cash.
I have had Insite Arms spin me up at least 8-9 barrels for mine, so no shortage or good Canadian smiths to get barrels from too.
These rifles are pricey, maybe same as a good custom build, but no regrets from me and the bull pup design is fantastic, if it suits you?
It is heavy, but not way more then my AI AT, with similar barrels on them.

I have an SRS-A1, an SRS-A1 Covert and a new SRS-A2 Covert. I have owned a bunch of high end custom rifles but have shot nothing but Desert Tech for the last six years. With a 16.5" 308Win barrel the A2 Covert weighs in at 8lbs, is 261/2" long and shoots 1/2 MOA groups all day long. The trigger is a crisp 2lbs. Awesome machines.

Bumping this thread... I'm thinking of getting a SRS-A2 covert with 308 16" barrel. Anyone have any suggestions on where to buy and if there are 3rd party barrel options out there cheaper than DT these days?

The DT barrels are incredibly expensive to make, due to the nature of their design. I don't think you are going to find anywhere that has DT barrels that would be considered "cheap".

The only Canadian company that I know making them is Insite Arms: https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...n-PreOrder-NOW-Accuracy-International-Prefits

Perhaps there are others, though I would be surprised. Small market share and they are not easy to make.

Anyone active here with an SRS Covert? I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a scope mount for an optic with a 56mm objective... how high should the optic be off the rail?

Does anyone know of any retailers that might have an A2 conversion kit in 308 16”? I checked with both Calgary Shooting Center and Wolverine which are the dealers I’ve come across? Anyone else out there carry DT?

I just bought one on Friday from Wolverine
They had a “unfired demo” whatever that means, 308 16” conversion kit.
I have a SRSA2 Covert in 338LM 18” too

I’ve used the following scopes on a Covert, all with either Nightforce 1.5” rings or a SPUHR 4002.
ZCO 527
S&B PM2
Kahles 624i and 525i
Eotech vudu

No issues with any

Strange. I was talking to them earlier in the week about that kit and they couldn’t find all the pieces. I guess they found them and you got to them before they called me back. Good for you. Sucks for me :)

Ps. Thanks for the tips on the scope mount.

How’s the 338 in 18”? I saw someone post one for sale in the EE saying it was like a flame thrower ;)

Really? Now I’m worried!! Lol
I read the add and it never mentioned it was an incomplete conversion kit, the price certainly suggested it was complete.

Anyway, see what happens I guess.

You may want to call. They had trouble finding the barrel, but as of my last conversation, still didn’t have the bolt, bolt stop or mag that goes with the kit.

Ps. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the last year... never buy anything unless you call and someone can confirm they actually have hands on it. These retailers websites are terrible for indicating stock of stuff they don’t actually have.

I have the srsA2 chassis with the 18" 338 lapua A1 conversion and it comes in right around 8lbs for weight.

It is exceptionally accurate, as far as fireball goes, it is not something you see or get any negative effects from when actually shooting the rifle
