Whats THE Ruger No.1 You Just Gotta Have?

Back when I lived in a shotgun-only deer area, I lusted after exactly that ^, a quality singleshot 12ga rifled-barrel slug gun.

The most accurate slug shotgun I ever owned was a cheapo H&R Ultra Slug; how much cooler it would have been to launch those plastic-wrapped lead bricks out of something like a 12ga #1?:)

I had it, then sold it. Ruger #1-S Medium Sporter chambered in the 300 H&H. Kicking my butt for selling it.:bangHead: It was very very accurate and had great feather-crotch rear stock.

The rifle nerd part of my brain wants one in 450 Nitro. It just seems to make the most sense for the platform.

The poor bastard stuck in a whitetail blind making 50 yard shots part of my brain would sure like a 257 Roberts.

I can't warm up to the beavertail. Not even sure that I want to. A 9.3x74R would be interesting too but I have a hard time doing the math to make a German cartridge belong in an English-style action.

I've got an H in 458 WM. It's fun but I haven't found a reason to use it for years. Maybe I'll scope it for next deer season.

I had a 450 NE 3 1/4" No. 1. I had a few threads on it back when I owned it.

I had a 500 grain TSX going 2450 fps (waaaay hotter than the traditional double rifle loading of 480 grains at 2100).

My issue was it was excessively light. (122 ft-lbs according to recoil calculator) Ruger put the C profile barrel on it for some reason. It was only 7.5 lbs. I made a lead filled tube for the buttstock and scoped it. All that only brought it up to 9.5 lbs which was still obnoxious for something creeping up on a 460 Wby. Manageable and kind of fun off hand, don't try it on a bench though.

Fun rifle though. I sold it to a friend who has never sold a rifle in his life (just buys) so I know I can shoot it another day.

i cant help but feel Rimmed all the way though :D

Heard a Driller talking about this in a late night Doghouse BS session. My inner voice said " Self ( I knew it was me, because I recognised my voice and my name is written on my underwear elastic), I'd have kept that for an inside story...":sok2

I have one in 338-378. Wildcat until Weatherby started making it. Scope was mounted farther back too. It’s hard to get the 14” of eye relief you want when you pull the trigger.

A good friend on mine has a No1V in 300 win. It will be mine some day he just doesn't know it yet.

I missed out on a 264 a few years ago feom Prophet River.
