Off the top of my head, I can think of removing rabbit heads with 303 British, 300 WSM and 375 RUger. Many grouse heads have been removed by a larger selection of big game rifles. :)

Over the long term, the average is one fatality from browns and grizzlies per year. Blacks take another one. You are several hundred times more likely to get hit by lightning than killed by a grizzly.

I like the lightening reference.
However, if you are hunting in country infested by bears, in weather not containing storm clouds, you are more likley to have an unexpected encounter with a bear, then get struck by lightening.

I lived the major part of my life in black bear country. Huge numbers of black bears. The last few years we were there, at times, recess for kids was canceled because of bears in the school yard. I had dozens (probably closer to hundreds) of bear encounters. Had a few close encounters as a result of my own youth and stupidity (thank God I'm not young anymore), one too close meet with a sow and cubs (that I had not seen until too late), and one uncomfortable encounter with a rather large boar where I had to use pepper spray, although he did not attack or threaten me. He just refused to stop walking towards me despite yelling and throwing stones at it. Did a lot of wilderness camping as a youth, and with my wife and 4 kids. Bears are definitely not something I worry about. I don't personally know of anyone that was attacked, despite the fact that more than 50% of the population were hunters, outdoors people and berry pickers. Tons of nuisance bears, yes, but deadly bears, nope. I know of several outfitters that have guided for years with no dangerous encounters.

Now, that being said, bears are big animals, and have the potential to seriously maim or kill. And, like wives, they can be cantankerous and unpredictable. If someone feels more comfortable with some sort of defensive weapon (against bears, not wives), you might as well carry something that will stop the critter in its tracks.
 
You are more likley to get struck by lightening on a golf course during an electrical storm then killed by a bear on that same golf course.
That's why I prefer hunting in bear infested areas rather than golfing near cantankerous and unpredictable women. ;-)

Says the guy from Saskatchewan. I know that in my area nothing can be further from the truth.
 
There is a road not too far from me that is locally famous because every man that lives on it has been mauled by a bear.

I’ve never heard of a hunter killed by lightning, grizzly bears, indeed. I think dogleg is a landed immigrant, needs to educated himself on Canadian hunting history.
 
Nice, things have degraded into a bear defense thread. Love it.

I know when I worked in Geology I ran into predators (mostly bears) so often that I literally made plans for as many attack scenarios as I could think of. Made me sleep a little better at night, most of them involved shooting if possible then sacrificing my left arm so I could stab the SOB to death. I think its quite good for your mental health to realize how fragile and helpless you really are in the world.

Just out of curiosity, how many people do you know, have been killed or maimed by bears in your lifetime? As I stated earlier - I lived 2/3 of my life in an area with very heavy black bear populations, and I don't personally know a single person, nor do I remember hearing about anyone, being killed or mauled by black bears in my neck of the woods. I can remember one in the North Bay area, one around Kapuskasing, one in Cochrane, but that is in 55 years that I can remember, and an area the size of most European countries. I've heard of a lot more accidental shootings than bear killings, so maybe a large caliber ballistic vest would be a better investment.

But then, any reason to go into the bush with one's toys is a good one, so enjoy.
 
I think our all round cartridge needs to be able to to anti material or anti vehicle as well.

Statistically it is a 1 or 2 to 33,000 chance to die from a bear attack or to die in a car accident.

If we are so afraid of bears .... then we definitely need a cartridge for vehicles.

I know two people who this year alone had grizzly encounters that could have gone very badly. IE grizz inside of 40 yds coming with ill intent. They happen every year here. One was my hunting partner.
 
I know several people that have been attacked by both black and grizzly bears. I know dozens of people that have had negative encounters that could easily have gone very bad. Bear attacks aren't frequent, but they are common enough to not try to sugarcoat it and pretend they don't ever happen. I don't know anyone that has drowned, but I'm not going to try to convince anyone that they should ignore the danger of drowning when around water.
