How long till we see wide spread Sustenance hunting ?

so back to the topic of this thread....

"sustenance hunting" aka poaching and or rustling is something that goes on all the time. If people get desperate there will be an increase, but what's the point if you can't buy gas to get to where the animals are?

the Zone I hunt is about an hour and a half drive. I can hunt in my back yard, it backs on to an ecological zone and that connects all the way down the river valley, its designated as a bow hunting zone only but if your willing to do a little off season shooting there is plenty of game there. Saw a nice little bull moose yesterday browsing on the willows in my back yard, pointed it out to my wife which reminded her that last year a moose came and ate all her peas and I said I would get that 6' fence built to protect her garden.... stupid moose :(

The overwhelming majority of Canadians are urban folks. They're not going to be doing any widespread subsistence hunting.
Rural folks, those in less settled areas, I suppose might stock up their larders. But widespread?

ammunition is about to jump 30% and that was calculated prior to coronavirus and the tanking loonie.
Those who spend a lot of time at the range or have rifles with pricey ammunition are best served to buy what they can afford now.
It's a simple supply and demand game and the demand is increasing drastically regardless of what is causing it.
The virus will slow imports to a crawl so again..... if you have plans that require ammo in the next 2 or 3 years , buy what you can afford now.

This^^^ and before price gouging really gets rolling
As in the other thread that just got Nucked

If this rolls into a depression, money will be in short supply for many. For those that have ammo and skills, but no money, selling game meat or "free range" beef to those who have cash, but no ammo or skills, might be the only way for those individuals to earn an income, other than armed robbery.

Lots of racoons and rats in Toronto. :)

Yep say goodbye to sport hunting thanks to all the sustenance hunters. Believe me it wouldn’t take much

Nope, numbers probably won't change much from what it is now, EXCEPT the FN hunters will be sharing with their White Brothers! :)

I'll be heading out for the spring season and super happy for my family and others if I fill a freezer. I've been wondering if they're going to limit mobility and effectively kill the season.

There is not a supply issue of meat in Canada. There may a pending financial reason why someone cannot afford to purchase meat, that is why the Govt is actively informing people that $$$ will be coming their way.
If food prices were to skyrocket, the government would also enact pricing controls, and quickly, to quell the masses. No, I do not trust the government... but... that is what would or will occur.

Canada has a majority of "survival" dependent people, their survival is dependent on others knowledge and ability. The average person will still be able to purchase meat easier than to hunt it or steal it "on the hoof". The average person would not know how to process a stolen cow. So if either were to begin occurring, it would be a small group of people doing it, and then selling it to others whom are deficient in the knowledge of how, or the gonads to do it themselves.

Any such illegal activity, either poaching or rustling will simply be opportunism. In other words, anyone who will do this is essentially already criminal in their intent. Only with a complete collapse of society, law and order, would it be a significant issue in my opinion. I do not foresee a high probability of societal breakdown in Canada at this time.

Not quite, I've got a freezer full of meat. But the rural folk would be sitting ducks whether they realize it or not.

If they realize it, are they really sitting? Doing chores with lethal overwatch? Noting unusual activity and community response. No cell phones required. no internet trail. You better stay away from copperhead road.
