I've had several scopes cr*p out on me - all of decent quality. Yes, old Redfields are decent, but you may have a lemon. In addition, you stated that the barrel was not centred in the barrel channel of your old stock, and would make contact when on the bags. That will definitely cause problems...
I've got to the point where I have a 'master' scope that I know works well. Any new (to me) rifle, gets a trial run with this scope. In addition, I built a scope tester - a rigidly mounted aluminum plate with bases that allows me to do the box test.
