China's not so new assult rifle - QBZ95

Yes and no Scarecrow. The "sniper" model preceeded the Type 97. It was designated as the QBU-88. If you look at it you will notice a distinct simularity. The export version of the QBU-88 is designated as the KBU-97A, is chambered in 5.56x45mm and uses stanag magazines. It is a different rifle but definately in the same family. Much like an AR-10 and AR-15 if they were both chambered for the same round.
Either way it's not on the prohib list and there is an export version just like the Type 97. Since it is the first of the new bullpup weapons with the 5.8 round I'd say the Type 97 has a lot of it's design based on the QBU-88. Seems to me it does have something to do with it.

Different gas system, different trigger linkage, different recoil spring, different bolt carrier. IE you're mistaken.

Looks like they made some improvements. Same concepts though.

Plus I'd like to see the newer export version side by side with the export version of the Type 97. You have the older non export Type 88 compared to the export version of the Type 97. I don't know if there are any differences but it would be worth checking out.

While I have to agree they are different, I still believe they are similiar and more importantly they can be imported into Canada as well. Since a rail can't really be added properly to the Type 97, the Type 88 is more interesting. A shame really because the internals of the Type 97 look to be a decent improvement over the 88. Maybe they'll make a Designated marksman version of the Type 97.

If the prices come down I might break down and just get a Type 97 I have lots of other railed and scoped rifles. The type 97 would just be a cool plinker for me.

I sent an email to Marstars: Here's the response.

When more become available we will try to get some.... Pricing at Marstar is always lower than elsewhere.... John

So there you go.
No doubt as soon as my finances recover from my other purchases one of these will come in to put me back into debt. :D

By the way Scarecrow, good post and good way to show your point.

Norinco won't redesign a complete rifle just because it takes a new magazine. Your only change will be in things like bolt face and magazine release.

type 97 has been available for whats likely to be a decade. Marstar hasn't made any attempt to get these to us so I wouldn't keep my fingers crossed, you're more likely to get an email telling you he will get you one if you are a LEO or MIL.

Lever has them in and there is definately interest in this rifle. Marstars was beating out Lever in terms of price on other products, now Lever responds with new products. It would only make sense that Marstars would attempt to import them. If there is a market for it, money can be made. Besides the groundwork has already been done

By the way Scarecrow, don't get me wrong while I liked your post showing the internals and do respect that. I still think a lot of your posts come across as a&&hole like. Just a thought for you. Since mutal respect doesn't appear in your posts.

Considering the Chinese developed the QBZ-03 perhaps they decided that design wasn't the best one ??

Mind you I'd be willing to spend up to 100$ on a single box (20 rounds) of 5.8x42 mm if I can get my hands on it. :p

US style PASGT helmet. ... Can't the Chicoms at least be a bit more original & come up with their own invention instead of keep copying others?

PASGT helmet is a pretty convincing copy of an earlier design. The Wehrmacht used 'em in WW2 and IIRC, there was a pretty big kerfuffle over the design similarities when the US made the switch.

Designs that work get copied, by everybody.

There are only so many ways to do that - why don't you accuse the Russians because they are moving away from their motorcycle and egghead helmet too!

Yeah, that was kinda my point - if a design works, others will use it. I'm just saying hate the Chinese for their crappy lead-paint-covered-GHB-filled toys, not because they recognize a good design when they see it.

Germans had the most intelligent helmet coverage of any design, so when anybody designs a helmet that covers as much it ends up looking similar. Its not because they endorse Hitler or something.
