I once was woken in the middle of the night by a ruckus on the deck at the back of the house. When I turned the light on I am face to face with my 2 cats.... clinging to the sliding screen door. I was pretty confused by the whole thing and opened the door and they quickly vanished into the house like thier tails were on fire.
I went out onto the deck and grabbed the only object within reach, a heavy rubber mallet from a project earlier that day. As I got to the edge of the stairs to the yard and away from the deck lights, peering into the darkness at the bottom of the stairs I just see eyeballs.... pairs of them..... and lots of them LOL
I took one step forward to get a better look and all of a sudden I hear this crazy growling and eyeballs coming at me fast. I couldn't see what they were but my reaction was to chuck that rubber mallet at those eyeballs and headed into the house as fast as the cats did LOL
I couldn't find a flashlight and went back to bed.
Next morning I go outside and have a look see and I find blood near the bottom of the stairs. About 40 feet away along the side fence I notice a ball of fur about the size of a cat..... hmmm
I go over to it and it's breathing but obviously injured. Turns out to be a racoon kit or pup or whatever they call young racoons. I picked it up with a towel and brought it inside. Gave it some veggies, catfood and water and it's own basement room to hang out it. After a day it was cruising around and got real unhappy when I opened the door LOL
Called the animal hospital and they sent me to a wildlife rehab which agreed to take the racoon.
As I was trying to get the thing into a cat cage it pulled some ninja move in the towel and jumped free but as it did that it firmly chomped down on my index finger and was an 8ish pound ball of fury hanging from my finger. My girlfriend grabbed the towel and the raccoon and I grabbed it by the scruff with my free hand and it finally let go of my finger which was gushing blood at this point LOL
So off to the critter rehab to drop off the injured racoon and promptly to the chilliwack hospital ER for a dozen or so stiches and shots for tetanus and had to get my blood tested several times in the following weeks to rule out any other nasties like rabies ect.
Fun times...... I never want to repeat again LOL
No racoons where I live now
