Killing raccoons in the city - Toronto

"But coons are cute! I don't understand why you ant to get rid of them."

The buggers bite and scratch and are very possessive of your garbage and porch, shed, attic etc. I keep a water gun with vinagre in it, they sure don’t like it without fries and while I would like to permanently dispatch it is hard, as noted, in an urban setting, especially if someone sees something scary like a gun!

I once was woken in the middle of the night by a ruckus on the deck at the back of the house. When I turned the light on I am face to face with my 2 cats.... clinging to the sliding screen door. I was pretty confused by the whole thing and opened the door and they quickly vanished into the house like thier tails were on fire.
I went out onto the deck and grabbed the only object within reach, a heavy rubber mallet from a project earlier that day. As I got to the edge of the stairs to the yard and away from the deck lights, peering into the darkness at the bottom of the stairs I just see eyeballs.... pairs of them..... and lots of them LOL
I took one step forward to get a better look and all of a sudden I hear this crazy growling and eyeballs coming at me fast. I couldn't see what they were but my reaction was to chuck that rubber mallet at those eyeballs and headed into the house as fast as the cats did LOL
I couldn't find a flashlight and went back to bed.
Next morning I go outside and have a look see and I find blood near the bottom of the stairs. About 40 feet away along the side fence I notice a ball of fur about the size of a cat..... hmmm
I go over to it and it's breathing but obviously injured. Turns out to be a racoon kit or pup or whatever they call young racoons. I picked it up with a towel and brought it inside. Gave it some veggies, catfood and water and it's own basement room to hang out it. After a day it was cruising around and got real unhappy when I opened the door LOL
Called the animal hospital and they sent me to a wildlife rehab which agreed to take the racoon.
As I was trying to get the thing into a cat cage it pulled some ninja move in the towel and jumped free but as it did that it firmly chomped down on my index finger and was an 8ish pound ball of fury hanging from my finger. My girlfriend grabbed the towel and the raccoon and I grabbed it by the scruff with my free hand and it finally let go of my finger which was gushing blood at this point LOL
So off to the critter rehab to drop off the injured racoon and promptly to the chilliwack hospital ER for a dozen or so stiches and shots for tetanus and had to get my blood tested several times in the following weeks to rule out any other nasties like rabies ect.

Fun times...... I never want to repeat again LOL
No racoons where I live now :)

3 weeks at the new place, and some dirty rat has already dropped off a bunch of coons. Afternoon last week, 5 young ones (7 week old) were all sitting at the edge of the driveway.

Against my better judgement of mercifully shooting them all on the spot, we agreed to wait a day. Only 2 survived the night.

Against my better judgement (which I'm starting to question) there are now 2 baby raccoons in a crate in my basement, as my wife pursues her rehabilitator license under guidance of local shelter.

Mr. CP (for cranky pants) and Fiona, are their names.

What the hell is happening? Has the whole world gone mad?

Your wife must be a special and gifted woman is what I have to say about this post. You must be a lucky husband to find such a fine woman.
I'd have capped the lot in a heartbeat... but then I'm not as lucky as you, lol.

I had to re-read that.... I thought for a second or 2 you were calling your missus Cranky Pants :)

well we don't have racoons out here

but the Wife and I watched a deer graze in the back paddock for about a hour last night while we were BBq'ing burgers

I don't know if she is going to let me shoot them back there come hunting season :( awww its a cute little deer :(

however that nasty big old moose that's been eating her trees is fair game :)

No racoons? I live in the middle of the prairies and we have them. Seen a dead one turned into an organic Frisbee on the #1 by Suffield when I was but a pup. Suffield...like K-rat territory... semi arid desert IIRC.
Respectfully, they are likely around somewhere. They are like cockroaches. I have a clutch of free range chickens...I hate racoons, lol.
Hardy buggers though

Please dont relocate them. They transfer disease, disrupt local populations and they all apperently come to my house. I've had a lot to deal with this year. The 17wsm really flattens them out.
Thinking of getting 12ga reduced re coil slugs just to change it up , may become justification for a tacticool 12ga. I had 8 to deal with as the sun set a few weeks ago, in the morning it looked like a Mexican Cartel crashed a birthday party . I have them in the daytime, hear them sqealling in the night. The dumping ground has got a nasty smell coming of it
Deal with them where they're causing the problem.

There's a few, just saw one the other day. It's a fairly recent thing though, same as ticks. Soon we'll see opossums. - dan

never seen a racoon around here, we have had chickens out at the ranch for years and never a problem with racoons.

coyotes and the odd hawk have taken a few birds.

I suspect in time they will end up hitching rides on trucks and get established.

Spotted one in the river valley a couple weeks back walking the dogs. They wanted to go after it in the worst way. Also saw a half dozen coyotes just a little further downriver. - dan
