Killing raccoons in the city - Toronto

Drowning an animal is messed up

I used to think so too.... then i saw the difference between a 20 second struggle in the water and the 5 minutes of animal screaming and flopping in agony from a botched critter dispatch when a fallow up shot couldn't be used.

putting prairie dogs in a KFC bucket and sailing them into a lake to watch them freak and drown trying to climb on each other... cruel
dropping a live trap into a full pail of water... pretty quick, as soon as they exhale its pretty much over.

one could always live trap it... then send it to raccoon heaven via the garbage truck, let the compactor do the messy work, you would lose the trap though.

Release on Crown land
Anybody asks - tell 'em that's what you're going to do
(hint the bottom of all water bodies and the intertidal zone are Crown land in Canada)

And next week, he can come back and do it again, for a slight additional fee of course.:)

Grizz

Not this guy. I used to work with his wife and we were on good terms when she left (also met him at company functions), so we're cool. I would have invited them over for housewarming even if it wasn't for the raccoons lol I'm assuming he'll trap, deny access, then release, not too close to here.

In the end, I recommended a commercial solution with low rates and a time guarantee. Poisoning is illegal in Ontario, including CO2. Even using Nitrogen/Argon to humanely kill them (neither is technically a poison) would leave carcasses behind and there are a couple of window-watching LibeRAT families occupying a bordering split lot. Had that particular lot been vacant or occupied by trustworthy types, the other neighbours wouldn't have been an issue and she could have applied the A/N-SS approach (Argon/Nitrogen, Shovel and Shut-up). Hell, a former neighbour even routinely shot'em and nobody complained as long as it was only long-time residents in the general vicinity. That guy sold the property and moved out shortly after she bought the property. Otherwise, even she, a long-time city-dweller that voted LibeRAT most of her life (until recently) would have pitched in for a brick of subsonics lol.

Seems to me the decent modern thing to do, is provide free drugs and entertainment.

Waddya think? About six hits of acid in some cocktail weenies and some strobe lights and maybe a seasonal fireworks selection!

Add a few dozen scrounged up bathroom vanity mirrors, around the fence at ground level, and maybe a box or three of stacked up tin cans...

Betcha the youtube income would way more than cover the headaches! :)

We're renting a unit, in a home, where a raccoon has ripped up the roof (damage caused) and taken residence in the garage attic. Now, I'd like to help the landlady deal with the pest, especially since my fiance is afraid of using the patio and also because they are damaging the garage roof. The landlady's nice, so I'd like to help her out with some good info. Based on the following link, it looks like the landlady is allowed to kill the animal:

The problem comes from other legislation. In Toronto, you get a $5000 fine if you discharge a 'firearm' (which includes crossbows), so that method of humane dispatch is impossible. Relocating the coon does nothing. Spearing/drowning are not allowed and kill traps may trap some neighbour's cat, so neither of those options would work. I was thinking of garbage bag and CO2 fire extinguisher, once caught in a live trap (she owns one). Would that be permitted, or would it run afoul of animal cruelty laws? I know they routinely do it to lab animals. Thanks for any tips you guys can give me.

P.S. Please note that this is a Toronto suburb, in the day and age of nosy hipsters and smartphones, so I wanna do everything by the book.

throw the food in the attic where it is . come on now think .

Throwing food in the attic would just feed them. Lacing the food with anything would be illegal and that would leave rotting carcasses in the attic. In any case, a PCO specialist is coming in tomorrow and, in the city, with so many legal pitfalls, it's better to let a pro do his job.

Again, 50/50 Fly bait and Coke in a bowl.

I heard about this one from someone . and PCO is going to cost you how much ? $350 plus ? and if you don't block up where they are coming in then they will be back . both parties . Racoons and PCO. someone mentioned relocate the Racoons . well it's illegal . they might have rabies and then your transporting a possible sick animal to another area . hence spreading the disease around .

“relocate to an area where it’s legal to discharge a firearm”... to clarify.
