308 Winchester or 270?

270 kicks but over the 308 everywhere, period. Even when heavy bullets are compared.

.277, 150g SD 279, max velocity 28 - 2900 FPS
.308, 150g SD 211, Max Velocity 28 - 2900 FPS
.308 lost on Sectional Density

.277, 160g SD 298, max velocity 27 - 2800 FPS.
.308, 180g SD 271, max velocity 25 - 2600 FPS.
.308 lost on Velocity and Sectional Density.
It only gets worse.

I’ve got both and I prefer my 270. Shoots flatter than the 308 if using the same weight boolits

The answer to "Should I get a .308 or a .270?" is the same as the answer to "Should I get a .308 or a .30-06?":

Yes, you should.

308 and 270 do the same thing with similar recoil.
308 is more efficient. It uses less powder and has a larger bullet availability. 270 May be flatter shooting but I dont see how that matters. Every caliber has drop. As long as you know how much then shooting a little farther isn't hard. 308 is also more efficient with a shorter barrel. The smaller the bullet is the more powder and barrel length is needed to keep up the speed.
I vote 308 but that said, either is fine.

I remember reading that the .270 Win is coming into its own with the advent of monometal bullets: that the case capacity combined with the ballistics and penetration of the 130 grainers makes it ideal for a pile of hunting in all game sizes at magnum ranges, without the magnum recoil.

Anyway, I like the .308 for combined target shooting and hunting. I'm more of a target shooter lately. If I were more hunter, I'd lean to .270 Win and .375 H&H magnum as ideal cartridges with a century of North American and African hunting history to read about.

IMO a .30-06 is always a nice combination of the .308 and the .270: You get .270 case capacity with all the .30 caliber target and hunting bullet options. If it were one rifle for everything including casual target shooting, then a 24" 7.25 lb .30-06 sporter with a Leupold 2.5-8x33mm would be an excellent jack of all trades.

I just never could and probably never will like the 270, even after owning many that shot super and some that were highly sought after.
That's just me, no particular reason for it but total prejudice towards the 270 Winchester and never could figure it out
Love the 6.5/06, nuts about the 280 Remington, but when it comes to the 270?? Meh!cp::bangHead:
I'll take a 308 every time even though realistically I really don't think it does anything better if at all over the 270, in fact it doesn't really.

I bet if a fellow owned both .308 and .270 rifles, he'd simply carry the one he liked better regardless of the cartridge in the chamber; the other rifle would become a safe queen. Like a few guys here, I have a prejudice against the .270 Winchester, probably from being brought up reading Elmer Keith, yet think highly of several 7mm. A caliper will tell you how logical that is. Back to the point though, I had a .270 Mauser Sporter in a Herters stock that just felt right to me, despite there being no checkering. I should never of sold that rifle; it carried easy, pointed quick, shot true, and the bolt was buttery smooth. As for versatility, everyone knows about light weight .277 bullets, but I've got a couple of boxes of .277/180 gr Woodleighs on my bench. They'd do better with a 1:9 twist, or quicker, rather than the 1:10 typical of most .270s, but if you think that the .270 lags for a lack of bullet weight, it ain't necessarily so. Loaded with 150 or 160 gr Partitions, a .270 will likely kill anything found on this continent, just like a .308 will when loaded with 165s or a 180s. IMHO, a .308 has the advantage if the barrel is on the shorter side, say 20" or so, and I think the .270 does best with a 24" barrel, although 22" is more common. That said, I once has a SAKO carbine in .270 that the chronograph thought had a long barrel, so you just never know.

It is always interesting to hear about personal preferences and dislikes. I am much like Iron Cat, except, I love the 270, and consider the 308
Winchester, the 25-06 and the 280 as "meh" chamberings. [I still see them as good, just not my bag of beans] I think that some of my
high regard for the 270 comes from the fact that I have taken game successfully "way out there" with that chambering. To get this in perspective,
only some Magnum chamberings have been as effective at long range for me. [e.g. 7mm Rem Mag, 308 Norma Mag & 8mm Rem Mag]

One serious advantage I must concede to the 308 Win, is the availability of relatively inexpensive ammo to plink or practice with. Other than
that, my 30-06 rifles trump it, particularly with bullets from 180 grains and up. Dave.

I've got 2 270's but they just seem so ho-hum and at least half a dozen 308's again ho-hum!

Now a 7-08 with 130's at 3125fps or 120's at 3200fps...nows thats exciting....:)

I might add that even though I have built some rifles in super performance long range and short range cartridges my goto all time favorite is a single shot in .303 British!:p

I have had both a .308 Win and a .270 Win

I much prefer the .270 Winchester... flatter shooting and a longer range rifle. I have always preferred flat shooting cartridges.

7-08 and 308 are both boring cartridges imo. For a short action cartridge I prefer the 284win. The best of the non magnum cartridges are 270, 280 and 30-06. jmo. I will make an exception for the 7x57 though :)

I'm with Eagleye and Guntech on this one. I've just had great luck with the .270 Winchester. My longest shot on game with a .270 happened a couple of years ago - 409 yards on a nice Mule Deer. The 150gr Partition, unsurprisingly, entered behind the near shoulder and exited behind the far shoulder. Simply fantastic performance.

I had an old Remington Mountain Rifle that had a fast barrel - 130's at 3200 and 140 Hornady SP at 3100. Currently my "wife's" T3 Superlite gives 2970 with the 150 Partitions.

I'm curious how it would work with Barnes' 95gr TTSX or their 110gr TTSX. It should shoot flatter than a .257 Weatherby, a round known as a very flat shooting deer round.

Mild recoil, flat shooting, readily available ammo and capable of taking any game you might normally expect to encounter in North America - not a bad combination.
