7mm-08 or 6,5CM

Sounds like a lucky shot....
Congrats!!

Lucky shot? Maybe ....... Moose do not generally drop at the shot unless there is a hit on the CNS.

I've shot a couple with with a 375 & a classic lung shot that did not respond to the shot at all. A newbie would have thought it was complete miss. This is more the norm for moose. The one I shot this fall was the same only shot a bit higher in the lungs. It ran till it didn't. Not a drop of blood was spilt as all the blood ran into the cavity and not out the entry and exit holes.

Must..............

Go.......................

Bigger!!!

Tally up another one for the target round. ;)

Killed my N AB Bull Moose with the CM this year. The bullet- Barnes 127 LRX- penetrated almost the length of the moose. Stopped against the pelvis/hip socket. The bull dropped at the shot and never moved.

Penetrating "almost the entire" length of a bull moose with an expanding bullet...

Mono-metals are not your average expanding bullet.

I know, but a bull moose is a very large animal. I have trouble believing what would amount to somewhere around 6' of penetration. My friend shot a nice mule deer buck that was facing him with a 200gr TSX out of a .300 Win Mag - he recovered the bullet out of the ham.

I should say that all of the moose and elk I have shot have been with 7mm and up, 160gr and up, and none have been head on.

My world isn't so small that I need to make up lies for a semi-anonymous Internet forum. A good friend and CGNer was hunting with me at the time, and helped with field dressing/butchering.

Even tho myself and friends have had some very quick kills with Barnes on frontal, or hard quartering to shots, I honestly wasn't expecting such a dramatic result on this moose. Small gun/big animal and all. I generally prefer the 'classic lung shot' as there is little waste, but that was the shot the moose gave me, and IME a Barnes 'straight on' yields results very quickly. Next one will probably walk off a ways... ;)

Glad to hear ya got your moose. Congrats!

So true. I'd gotten away from using them the last couple of years- this was a good reminder of what they do very well.

I was leery of them for a long time due to stories of animals walking off that I’ve read on the internet. I tried one this year and it yanked the carpet out from underneath a sheep so fast I thought I vaporized him and he disappeared. Granted, I don’t think you can put much weight on my sample size of one because he took one in the throat at about 3350 FPS. It was impressive.

The ballistic difference between the two inn real life is ridiculous to even ay one is better than the other.
It's like trying to compare the 270 Win and the 22800 Remington both shooting 140 grain bullets.
On paper MAYBE one can argue, but in reality at sane hunting distances an animal will not know the difference .

I find they walk off if you miss what you should be hitting. Otherwise they work well. :)

I had a great trip. I love NFLD.

I used a 160gr NP in my 275R which is pretty much the same as a 7-08 so applicable to this thread. I was able to buy those bullets at a very good price so took them. Had I been given a choice, I would have opted for the 150gr NP instead for a few more FPS.

Double lung. Clipped ribs in and out. Didn't lose more than one lb of meat to gunshot. I'd say the slower velocity had something to do with that.

The 175gr RNs were too long for my rifle as the chamber was cut with a match reamer and thus had a short throat.
