Deer Season 2020 Thread

Very exciting morning for the GF and I.
A few minutes past the one hour mark into legal time I look NW and see this guy coming our way at the base of the ridge through the bush less than 60yds west of the blind. I whispered to her we have a good buck coming get your gun up and ready. As he became almost parallel to us he crossed the narrow opening and came toward the blind quick enough I didn't have time to get my phone out to video.
At 25yds he stopped and looked at the blind knowing something wasn't quite right but not quite certain what?
With the wind blowing from him to us he couldn't smell us and he stood long enough at alert and sniffing trying to figure things out that Deb was able to get the gun aimed through the window on my side and get an offhand shot.
He jumped at the shot and I could see he was hit. He ran about 30-35 yds then stood still for a second on wobbly legs and then it was all over as the nice 5x4 (9 point in eastern lingo) hit the ground, a puff of snow rising as he kicked his last couple seconds. When he hit the ground the hooting and hollering beside me was as loud as the blast of the rifle!!
So happy for and proud of her. What a great buck!! I cleaned it, skinned it, removed the tenderloins and backstraps and we hung the rest in the shed and will finish butchering it after hanging it overnight to cool nicely. And of course a deer hunt is never complete until the tenderloins and backstraps are grilled to medium after the hunt!!

Congratulations and Good Luck to Everyone.

The big bucks in my area are nocturnal so I harvested the first legal buck that showed up and tagged out early.

PS... I like to give a big shout out to the squirrel that raised the alarm that something was on the approach to my ground blind. Sometimes your worst enemy during deer season can also be your best friend :).

My Daughters first deer, little 2 point Muley, taken opening day with her .308. She got him at about 20 yrds, right where she should have but quartering away a bit, did not drop immediately, he ran down a revine stopped about 75’, I was not sure where she had hit him, so got her to plug him again. He proceeded to roll to the bottom of 180’ revine and came to rest in the creek. You could not even walk the slope so out come the ropes, 3 hours later and he was back up on the flats. She won’t forget that one.

That bullet mushroomed nicely, what is it?

Using a good old fashion Hornady 165gr SP over 40gr of 3031 @ 2400 fps out of my 16" barrel 700 SPS.

Buck was quartering away from me... heart shot at 35 yards and retrieved the bullet just under the skin on his right side.... "Didn't go 20".

Hey GoFast240....nice !

When I was in WY on a MD hunt, the one old guide had welded a second rim to the outside of the rim on his back (drivers side) tire
I said "whats that?"

He had a whole bunch of rope wrapped around a winch at the front - basicaly a guy would stand there and roll out the rope then roll up the slack.

If he had to pull one out of a deep ravine, he jacked up the back tire so it was off the ground, ran the rope down to the deer, once around the rim, put the truck in gear and let the wheel turn, and that winched the deer up the slope. The guy at the front reels in the rope. (in this case strap)

Note the bucket on the front for carrying deer - a guides truck that was set up as such.

Worked pretty slick. I will see if I can find a picture to post

Found it - had to scan a couple pictures

Really dont need the big wheel at the front, it just keeps track of the strap
The drive wheel rim does everything

I bagged a nice whitetail doe, probably 2 years old. I was lucky and drew an "antlerless" tag in Qc. The whitetails are definitely bigger than the little blacktails we have back on Van Island!

I used a cz527 carbine in 7.62x39 with the PPU PSP ammo since the guys I was hunting with use caches.

Tasty looking stuff!!

Was out from 630am to almost 5pm yesterday. Nothing seen, and only heard something walking through water through thick brush around 3pm.

Calling for lots of snow next week, if i am going to get one i think it will have to be before Sunday.

The only good news so far is that i am pretty sure the big guy that appeared last december is still around and came through saturday night (could be a different one but the way the main beam comes out it looks very similar!). Can't eat pictures, though!

Finally a nice day. Walked the hay 1/4 this morn, heading S into the breeze walked all the low lying willowy/brushy sloughs, walked the creekbed, on way back N walked the hilltop copses of trees. Only fresh tracks going from copse to copse of trees. Never saw a thing.

Nice day for a walk though and picked out two potential Christmas trees, have to take the wife out for final selection.

Have had the same 4 or 5 nice bucks on the property this year. A nice scrub with a dangling antler, a solid 10-pointer with a broken? hurt back leg, and a few little six pointers.

First time seeing this guy, midnight until about 3am last night.

Not sure if there's a better way to post trailcam videos.

I have been seeing the same deer regularly all year. I'm surprised that they stick to an area like this. Also, more bucks than does around here, which is the reverse of what I'm used to seeing.

Ditto, only seeing a few does and probably the same ones whereas i have seen 4-5 different bucks. Once the season is over i will have to comb through all the cam pics to get a closer look at who is around. The big ones mostly all come out at night, mostly.

Hoping they catch wind of a last estrous doe and happen to come through looking during daylight. Sucks hanging on a hope!!

Pic cropped and contrast/exposure adjusted for better view, this morning at 2:34am
