Very exciting morning for the GF and I.
A few minutes past the one hour mark into legal time I look NW and see this guy coming our way at the base of the ridge through the bush less than 60yds west of the blind. I whispered to her we have a good buck coming get your gun up and ready. As he became almost parallel to us he crossed the narrow opening and came toward the blind quick enough I didn't have time to get my phone out to video.
At 25yds he stopped and looked at the blind knowing something wasn't quite right but not quite certain what?
With the wind blowing from him to us he couldn't smell us and he stood long enough at alert and sniffing trying to figure things out that Deb was able to get the gun aimed through the window on my side and get an offhand shot.
He jumped at the shot and I could see he was hit. He ran about 30-35 yds then stood still for a second on wobbly legs and then it was all over as the nice 5x4 (9 point in eastern lingo) hit the ground, a puff of snow rising as he kicked his last couple seconds. When he hit the ground the hooting and hollering beside me was as loud as the blast of the rifle!!
So happy for and proud of her. What a great buck!! I cleaned it, skinned it, removed the tenderloins and backstraps and we hung the rest in the shed and will finish butchering it after hanging it overnight to cool nicely. And of course a deer hunt is never complete until the tenderloins and backstraps are grilled to medium after the hunt!!
