Antelope by the dozens...

If they are anything like caribou, when you stop, they stop. They don’t get off the road, they just stop. I’m not saying I feel good about the carnage but it’s not as though the train can swerve or stop on a dime. Perhaps the coyote crowd from Alberta can throw sticks and tennis balls at them to humanely move them. Point being, trains have to use the track and the antelope are going to run on it because it’s easier for them. Unless one of these things change this will likely continue to happen.

The impact speed when the train reaches them is very low. A padded cow catcher would shove them off to the side where they’d tumble into the snow.

Wouldn’t help moose or elk, but at least antelope would have a better chance.

Difference is modern trains are a lot faster than those early steamers. Those antelope will be bounced into the next county. - dan
 
All save the animals types have to do is to set up patrols along those miles and miles of track to shoo the antelope off them. It would beat shutting down the economy and at the same time give those folks something constructive to do.

As that is the reasonable answer, yes. Animals die in collisions every year. Saving 20 or 30 antelope just isn't going to change anything. And I am pretty much against excessive regulation, having been on the receiving end of it for so many decades. - dan

Oil tailings ponds kill a few ducks when the cannons stop working. Fines and outrage.
Trains kill hundreds of antelope every year there is a bad snow storm and they do nothing.
I don’t like excessive regulation but if those tracks are going to be there for eternity and the antelope cross them ever year, it’s not unreasonable to expect CP to build a few crossings. Immediately.

Maybe when those folks who are scaring coyotes out of cities with pots and pans are finished they can go help the antelope next.
 
Don't we have trained protestes on tracks in Canada. Couldn't we get get them to run the rails before the trains go by to chase the pronghorns first
 
Not sure why a few of you people are losing your sh*t over this, does any one actually think this doesn't happen quite often.
Years ago we had a retired CN engineer in a hunt camp I belonged to in Northern Ontario. He did a run for years north out of Sudbury and said they hit many moose/deer on their shifts, 8 moose on one run they did in the fall. They weren't happy but what the hell are you going to do?
How did someone get access to that video ?
Happens all the time and has for 100 years, just now everybody owns a camera and are part of the new snowflake "woke" crowd.
 
When it’s mostly preventable in the case of antelope and occurs repeatedly, I lose my ####. I’m glad it was filmed, as hard as it is to watch, but it may help.
