Anybody hunting in Canada with 9.3x62

This thread pushed me over the edge. Have had a 9.3x62 on my gun list for years. Finally made
The jump. Hopefully have it before Christmas. The nice people at eagle firearms have a few on consignment. Was meant to be

Good for you, post a range report when you have trotted that pony through the paces. What platform did you buy for your 9.3X62?

Question Ted. I had/have a small selection of bullets to 'feed' my 9.3x62. Although with the accuracy results, I've only tried and plan to stay with the 285gr PRVI. In addition to those I had by Matrix that I traded off, I still do have some 250gr Speer, 286gr & 231gr Norma and a couple of boxes of Barnes 286gr TSX. Question, have you ever tried Barnes and if so, whats your opinion of them???

I can only speak for my rifle, classic example of one, but I couldn't get any speed out of the 286 TSX. I'm talking 1950 fps with so much 4350 stuffed in the case that I took a friend to the range when I tested them. Personally I think that the 286 TSX is too long for the X62 case...a 250 might work just that much better. Barnes has been telling us for years that we could take at least one step down in bullet weight with their bullets so it stands to reason.

I might have been able to forgive 2200 with the 286 TSX, but not 1950. That's just silly. Plus the TSX is just too damned tough for those speeds. It would probably kill like a hammer (I flattened my impala in Zimbabwe using a FMJ .375" bullet which not only killed him like lightning, but made the sewing job easy for the taxidermist), but funny old me, I still like to see some expansion.

Thanks for the info, experiences and opinions. :) Much appreciated. After developing an interest in the ;) '.366 Wagner', and prior to getting one, I started the preparation. From a local dealer/friend, I picked up a set of RCBS dies,, Lapua brass and 285gr PRVI bullets. I, over time at gun shows, acquired a small selection of other bullets to try as well as a 'few' boxes of once fires Norma brass. I have a fondness for full wood model rifles, but only in European calibres. So, I opted for an 'inexpensive' full wood M-70 Zastava. With the accuracy results I got with my initial loads using the 285gr PRVI bullets, I've not yet even tried any of the other bullets I have available. Considering the quality of the rifle, I'd be hard pressed to do better. Couldn't believe the results!! I have yet to try any expansion tests, ;) soon perhaps.
Scan of target on the way as we speak.

Since theres a lot of 9.3 guys here I gotta ask. Anyone shoot cast 286 grain loads? hard to find data for it but would love to try it out on elk next year :) Thanks

I am getting there, got a NOE .286gr mold, and bag of gas checks, Need a sizer and dies, i was given a few, and tried them with a reduced load, in the 9.3x74, 1900fps shot ok, but found difficult to load, and crushed 3-4 brass, so gave up for now.

Reading a bit on different forums regarding the 9.3x62 and the 250 acubond is the most mentioned bullet overall! Is the choice a good one for bigger tougher game like wood bisons(not the smaller plaine bison), grizzly and moose( moose ain’t really tough but is big)? How does that bullet hold up in general? How much lead is shed after recovery?

never recovered one in my bullet test but that is not the one i will use for bison.

have a look at the link given for the bullet test. yukon and bc people shot and help.

There's several posts of mine in this thread starting here: https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...-Cast-Bullet?p=9636645&viewfull=1#post9636645

Crushed brass is almost always because the case mouth is not flared enough to start the bullet into the case. Give it another go! :)

I'm a little late to the thread but this year a buddy of mine used my cz 550 in 9.3 x62 for his first black bear. The boar dropped on the spot with an 1-1/2" diameter hole clear through, behind the close shoulder and in front of the far shoulder. Bloodshot meat was very minimal and he took 90 pounds of meat out of it.

He should be posting here shortly.

My apologies for using so much bandwidth. How can we reduce the size of the bullet pictures?

Ted

Excellent!! Well done! Any details as to the distance it was shot at and the animal size? It's a hunt I hope to do one day and quite likely with the same calibre.

WoW cool!! Now I need to get going on the reloads... as soon as the kit gets here!!

thank you very much for the post and info from cutlass 65. we are all waiting for more details but the bullet did well for sure.

Again, well done :d and thanks for the info. A couple more quick details if I may ask. Where did you hit on the bull and a guess at the on the hoof weight?

Through the close shoulder side, found the bullet at the hide on the off side. Will be able to update Sunday for the weight, as i will be weighing it as i am curious also. Will weigh what i brought back, no hide, no guts. So will have to speculate. I do know 2 men can not lift the guts
