Just because somebody doesnt happen to have a pair of binoculars with them doesnt mean they are automatically going to be "scoping" people.

But they usually point the rifle at objects to identify them with the scope. Some of those unidentified objects turn out to be people,or livestock,or other things that a person has no business pointing his gun at.Can you honestly say that you have NEVER used a scope to look at something before knowing positively what it was?

Sounds like an admition of guilt.

Many years ago, when I was young and didn't know any better,I used my scope to count points ,check for antlers,or to verify species. However even then,I never pointed a firearm at any object unless I was 100% sure that it was not a person.Twenty seven years ago,I bought my first binoculars, and from that point on,I use binoculars for glassing, and never shoulder a rifle until I am prepared to shoot.

And everyone reading this thread noticed that you avoided answering my question.

What would you say would be the best of the low end binoculars? Can something usefull be bought for $150-$200? Are the Cabellas brand bino's any good?

I scope every thing including people, infact I think I scoped you once. I also only use my binocks AFTER I shoot just to see just what it was I hit.

Did you return to your truck to find four flat tires?Did someone come over and knock out some of your teeth? If not,it wasn't me that you scoped.:p

That depends on your intended uses for binoculars. If you sit in a stand and only use binoculars to check out possible animals,or to judge animals,a lower priced pair will work.If you intend to hunt the mountains where you will be glassing for hours at a time as in sheep hunting, you will require a much better pair to prevent eyestrain. If you are going with cheap binoculars, get porro prisms,if you buy roof prisms, make sure that they are phase coated, which are more expensive.

Seriously, do you want to be criminally charged? Trust me if you ever point a rifle at me, you'll be explaining that dumbass comment to a judge, heaven or earth, your choice. Good grief man. Grab a Criminal Code of Canada and read up on Pointing a Firearm. Not trying to be rude, just getting the point across.

You guys sure do read lots into what other people write. I'VE NEVER SCOPED ANYBODY. I don't hunt in Ontario or anything where there are hunters all over the place. I hunt on rivers in the Yukon, and I can tell the difference bewteen a moose on the shore and boat full of hunters coming down the river. Honestly, you guys are pretty alarmist on this one. And suddenly my rifle is loaded and ready to fire too? Give me a break, my scope and rifle never get pointed at people, I never chamber a round that isn't going to be fired in the next second or so. Because I use my scope to determine if a black bear on a hillside is worth going after, or if a moose on the shoreline at distance has a rack or not I'm suddenly scoping other people with a loaded firearm? Honestly; maybe some decaf is in order here.

it's just a matter of time before that "bull moose in the bush" becomes a hunter raking a horn and grunting like a bull. I'm sure you'll be able to count his points in the 9x scope

wow you guys are really hard on hunters who don't use binocs... (and not to defend the stupids comments that I've read about using a scope to identify stuff) I hunt in a group and we mostly do drives all day and 90% of the time, I hunt with my unscoped pump 308. Nobody in my group uses binoculars, if you cant see the antlers on the deer running by you, you just dont shoot it. If you're honeslty dumb enough to shoot at something you cant possibly 100% identify, you are not hunting in my group and YOU ARE INCREDIBLY STUPID.

There are plenty of reasons to use binocs, but for the way I hunt, there are more reasons to not use them.

There are a lot of us that are not as well equipped as we could be. I've never carried binoculars for hunting, but can see the advantage. I might add that I never shoulder the rifle other than to take a shot at game. I've always understood that using the scope as a gamefinder was bad practice.

I have two types.
One is a smallish Nikon Monarch 10x42 and Swarovski 8x56.
Both great, but Swar got excellent optics and is a pleasure to use it.
On minus side, bit heavy.

Interesting, seems to be a trend forming. In Provinces were most hunters don't use binoculars, they're are required to wear blaze orange/ safety white.

If everyone identified their target with binoculars first, there would be less shooting deaths, and you wouldn't need blaze orange. :runaway:

I kinda had it figured that way Northman. Personally, I understand that varied circumstances might not call for someone to use binoculars due to close proximity or whatever else may dictate the use or not of binocs. What everyone is up in arms about is those people who choose NOT to use these and then will use their scopes to glass other hunters. I've been scoped by such people and believe me that it's not pleasant. :)

I kinda figure that if your hunting with your rifle scoped, you should be carrying binoculars. If your shooting at ranges which make a scope necessary, then a pair of binos are also necessary. IMO

Please do not take my story as a personal insult, it's just a past experience of mine.

Cheers

Thanks for the clarification fellows. This seemed to be a miscommunication, and perhaps a lack of knowledge of what's going on down south on my part. I honestly didn't know that there were idiots down there purposely scoping out other people; and obviously if some of you have had this done to you then you would be very touchy about it. If I had spent years hunting where you guys do I might have known that my message might be misinterpreted. I guess that must be part of my being spoiled up here where I can hunt for several days without coming across anyone who's not part of my camp. And I've never seen anyone scope anyone else. Honestly, it's VERY common for guys up here to not have binos, but spot with their scopes instead. Not having your experiences with firearms-pointing idiots, but coming from an area where it's pretty normal to see a guy checking out a hillside with his scope, I was really surprised by your responses to what I thought was a fairly mundane post on my part. Anyways, certainly no hard feelings; these are DISCUSSION forums after all.
