Best Mauser 98 Receiver

And the M98 was created before WWI! It's just a rifle design that set the standard and still copied to this day (within cost limitations).

I don't think that there is only one elite Mauser action. Many are considered great, such as, Oberndorf, Gewehr, Fanzoj, FN, Argentine, Winchester, Spanish, Mauser 98, etc.

it is more the symbolic. like i wont get a nazi flag ... you may not see it but this is the way we ve been raised and it was not anti-guns in those days but not supportive that much of that crazy regime and all the supporters they had ...

I'm giving your opinion a bit more swing than the rest...you have a little better insight into it than us on this side of the pond. We had one of the bigger German POW camps (local) in the day. They German POW's were viewed differently here than they would have been across the pond. Historically if they could get over the wire and pass vetting... they got welcomed with open arms ( somewhat). Work on local farms, ranches & businesses. I am imagining that the men returning would not have had that charitable of a view.
Boots on the ground gives a different out look for sure.

I get what you're saying. It's not always rational, esp to those folks who didn't grow up in your shoes but it can be engrained in how you feel about certain items or symbols.

I never did like the 8x57 and would never use one for personal sporting for no other reason than it was used in 2 world wars against this country and others who were our allies. Is that kind of silly? Probably yes, but that's the way it is.

267 Canadians were killed in the boer war. You’d better sell me that .275 for scrap prices!!

I'm not hardcore enough to disregard the 7.92 x 57 cartridge because of it's user's. It's a great cartridge... used in many places. And many conflicts... but I don't pick any particular one to judge my pieces on.

Yeah, I don't see it that way at all. You do you though, more Mausers for the rest of us. - dan

Different strokes for different folks. My Grandfather was a WWII veteran, he had a P38 he carried for bears and when he went to the city. His Brother-in-Law was wounded in Italy and used a 8mm Mauser for hunting. Didn't seem to bother either of them.

A Mauser 98 isn’t a symbol of the Nazi Regime... are you suggesting the AK-47 is a symbol of Communism?

It’s just a gun.

i did not say the mauser 98 at large but the ones that represented the nazi regime ...

my grand father used a german k98 with partizan crest on it. that means he used one that was seized to any german carrier.

What about the 45-70, one could say it killed more women and children than actual combatants?

But, this is getting derailed. IMO the best Mauser 98's are the pre WWI South American contracts. The Peruvian 1909 is nicer than the Brazillian 1935.

With the stock at tradex drying up we might all be missing zastavas soon. Missed opportunity to play with a 375 or 458 wm

Where else could you get a full stock 8x57 rifle for 700 bucks?

Tradex had lots of lefties for sale :)
One of their 8x57's is really tempting, but I just bought a CZ557 in 8x57. One is enough for me.

x 2 on the South American opinion.

Given what has happened to the prices of decent military rifles, breaking one for the action might not make sense.
Reworking a military action into premium sporting configuration is time consuming, and expensive if not diy.
Once the rifle is completed, it may be difficult to sell it for the cost of the parts and labour.

Last total rebuild I did was not on a Mauser; it was a Greek Mannlicher-Schoenauer. Got the parts for three salvage grade actions, and assembled two. Extensive hand polishing was required to eliminate the pitting. Rewarding when the two little full stocked 6.5x54 carbines were finished, but an uphill struggle. I would rather start with a commercial action, or at least one that has had the major work already competed. That is why those FN commercials at TradeEx are attractive.
