I know some of us have hoards of rifles and some prefer single shots
looking to get into another but in a hunting caliber ,short barrel
I have had 45/70 and 38/55 in sharps /rollers./rugers/ Martini

TC Contender, H&R or NEF hands rifle

357
357 Maximum
357 Herrett

something cheap to reload with ease of components

Thoughts???

Thanks to the introduction of cheap bolt actions like the Savage Axis and Rem 783 there is very little market for single shots. The only ones that I know of that you can buy new are the CVA Scout (Prophet River has a few, but not in the calibers you're looking for) and the Henry Single Shot (which has a brutally heavy trigger).

PR does have them in 35 Whelen and 444 Marlin, heres the 444 one:https://store.prophetriver.com/cva-...-rail-mount-crushzone-recoil-pad-mfg-cr4913s/

The H&R and NEF rifles come up on the EE occasionally, but I usually see them in rifle calibers like 22 hornet and 45-70. TC seems like the best route to go due to the ability to source barrels on their own, but the price adds up pretty quick going that route.

Henry claims that after the recall their single shots will have lighter triggers, they say it’s unrelated but they fix it if you send it back.

I think I had a similar experience to yours with the trigger on a Henry single shot. Disappointing, nice guns otherwise

I haven't sent mine in yet, so I can't comment on that. I didn't think the trigger was THAT bad while dry firing it in the house, but once I got to the range and tried to shoot groups with it it became very apparent that the trigger was going to be an issue. And I started out on an Enfield then a Savage Axis, so I'm far from a trigger snob!

Between the trigger and the fact that I can't get my scope anywhere near far enough back with the standard weaver mount and regular rings I've soured on the rifle some. I know I could look into things like offset rings or a more expensive rail, but I bought it with the intention of using iron sights so I only have a scope on it now so I can work up a load thus I'm not interested in spending any more money on optic-related stuff for this rifle.

I'm a big fan of my ruger no.1 in 35 whelen. I sold a no.1 in 9.3x74r last year that I wish I could get back, but the mortgage needed to get paid at the time.

I owned two in the past one was a 458WM the other was a number 3 wearing a #1 butt stock in 45/70 the 458 was a trip to the Chiropractor after a day at the bench and the 45/70 was used for moose hunting one season then sold off for a Winchester 1895 in 338/06...short lived also.

I have two, Ruger no1 one in 30-06 and RSI and one in 9.3x62 an S model! Both great rifle and “cheap” to reload!

The single shot has not yet been invented that is as classy looking and as sleek as the John Browning's Hi Wall. Given the price on the originals, a Browning Model 78 or current Winchester variant is the next best thing.

Go ahead... try and change my mind.

As you mentioned .358 calibers, then you have all kinds of options from mild to wild: 358 Winchester, 35 Whelen, 358 Norma Magnum/35 Newton, 358 Shooting Times Alaskan...

One of our pretty talented Gunputz members is doing it with High Walls he built from scratch:

I have 2 Ruger #1 Single shots:

1. #1B originally an '06, but rechambered to 308 Norma Magnum. 180 Partitions and Norm MRP are "magic"
2. #1AB in 7x57, a recent acquisition. Have a very viable load developed already with the 140 AB. Dave

That #1 AB must swing like magic!
I owned a 7x57 in an RSI at one time but sold it to a friend that one is never leaving his grasp!
My 280 just got traded back for an Anschutz that I would like back, and the guy was looking for an elk rifle .

I've owned two Ruger #1's, 30-06 Springfield and 300 H&H. I only own a hinge single shot at the moment, chambered in the 300 H&H, made by Josef Just, Ferlach, Austria.

I have over the years used ruger#1, 1885 hi and low walls, Rossi,H&r, tc encores and contenders, baikals. My liking is for 1885 and the baikals. The baikals are under appreciated for what the are
